Now before anyone asks, I will say this Super Indie Karts is exactly like Super Mario Kart and not the N64 version but the classic Super Nintendo one that you probably didn’t even know existed unless you are a much older person than you care to admit.  SIK_3

But however, like the name suggests it is Indie characters that are the stars of this game. There are some popular characters as well, such as A.R.E.S from A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda or Filo from So Many Me…and let’s not forget Whispering Willows, either. These are characters who, during the year 2015 made their mark on the indie world and made a good impression on everyone. They wound up in Super Indie Karts as playable characters, much like Nintendo’s take on Mario Kart in recent years; by introducing all their characters into it slowly instead of keeping it themed only with Mario.

Now how does the game handle it? Pretty well, I’d say; although at times I am easily confused considering the flat layout they go with in terms of level design.images.akamai.steamusercontent.com It keeps true to a Super Nintendo style of appeal in terms of visuals, although I would have preferred something a little more modern and easier on the eyes.

Now in terms of racing, there are various game modes and circuit races, like in many other styles of racing games. You can battle on various maps and the player who scored the highest wins. Hell my first time around I actually managed to get a second place just by jumping into it, although I did have it on Easy mode.

Even items in the game have their own unique charm while still being fairly unique in terms of gameplay. Where Mario Kart has mushrooms, here you get the more obvious jalapeno pepper; because that will put more fire in your exhaust pipe if you know what I mean.

Control-wise it’s fairly straightforward, although there is little in the way of tutorials. A bonus though is that it does have controller support, although that should be a given for this type of game. Music-wise, it’s pretty smooth and really does give you that classic type of feel that you would expect from an early console. It makes the game a lot more enjoyable.

That is to say also that the game is fun and enjoyable, but I just wish it didn’t have as many similarities as it did. The indie games were unique because they stood out, and it feels like these titles are blending into the mainstream and that they are losing the charm that made them good in the first place.

Do I recommend it? Yeah. If you want to play a classic-style racing game and don’t own a Super Nintendo, Super Indie Karts is your best bet. That is why I enjoy it; I am older than I care to admit! So be sure to check it out on Steam!
