Haven Editorial: Scheming Control Scheme

Scheming Control Scheme

control-sheme
There are some people who will defend mouse and keyboard to death, as the superior way of controlling a game and to some degree they are right. However a gamepad is just as valid way of playing a game and it’s not that hard to implement. Some might say there are too few keys, however that can be rectified with combination keys. Sure in most competitive games such as League of Legends, CS and over watch is best played with mouse. However I’m not referring to competitive games here.

Diablo is a well known and lover series. That made people feel entitled to using mouse and keyboard as the best and only legit way to play. Never mind that you aim, run, attack, interact, pickup and almost everything else with it. Since most similar games copy this control scheme many of these games becomes chore to control. Why do I have to hold down a key to avoid running into the enemy? When having aiming and movement separately works just fine. I can’t really count the amount of times I end up picking up an item instead of attacking.

One might think that there are a key shortage on a gamepad. However that is all down to poor programming, planing and some ignorance. Here let me show you the glory of combination keys. Hold down a face key and press one of the shoulders. A very simple and very functional control scheme. Especially for games about ruing around and killing things in a top down perspective.

Yes the mouse is, however as time goes by the body stops being that awesome. Which means that prolonged usage of this device will screw the wrist over hard. Causing chronic pain and general discomfort. Yes tendonitis is a real thing and a real word.

From what I can see, there is generally only one reason why a lot of games don’t have support, especially older ones. Because it was not until the Playstation was a thing a decent gamepad existed. Ironically enough the Playstation version of Diablo have controller support with combination keys. Which means that a lot of these games was build from the ground up with an all in one solution.

I have no idea why so many people are triggered by the mention of gaming pc with a gamepad. Here are some wonderful quotes from elitist PC gamers. The kind with short temper, that just can’t accept other control schemes.

“You guys know the game cant be controlled with a controller right? You all keep asking controllers for every game as if a pad is not an inept piece of shit that cant play three quarters of the gaming genres”

“Those of you who prefer to play your “PC games” on the couch? I’m sorry but those are not PC games, they’re console ports of console games. Real, actual PC games are those like this one here, that support PC input instead of console control schemes”

From a business standpoint, having both gamepad, keyboard and mouse at the same time is the best way to do it. Since the game in question will be more accessible, which means more sales. And no, you don’t have to dumb down games and include auto aim and such. Just separate aiming and movement.

Haven Review: Mighty No.9

2942839-mighty+no.9_logo_brush+up1015Growing up there have been very few games that have left an impression on me. One of those games was Mega Man and the franchise it spawned. However in the declining years we have witnessed many attempts to create a better and better Mega Man title and we have blamed Capcom.

All the way to the point where Capcom has stopped producing Mega Man games which lead to them not even knowing who are fabled blue bomber is when Nintendo asked to put him in smash brothers.

However not long ago the former creator of Mega Man left Capcom and although he could not take his prodigal son with him. He decided to create a new IP in the name of Mighty No.9 or Beck if you want to call him by his proper name. A Kickstarter was launched and funding began to flow in for his new Mega Man and after a series of lengthy delays we ended up with a bad trailer and a game shortly after.
mighty-no-9-freeze Which I have had the dubious honor of playing both on Xbox One and the PC and I have come to a reasonable conclusion that! It probably wasn’t Capcom’s fault for the decline of Mega Man.

The first of many issues I encountered was its level design and lack of instruction for the game character. You see in the original games they went to great lengths to teach you the controls from jumping, to attacking and dodging, in this it gives you a very brief tutorial at the start of the game and after that.. We’ll it’s on your own after that.

Take for example the Power Plant stage in the game at one point of the stage it tells you to do a crotch dash and you have not been taught that anywhere in the game at all. So you try and waste countless lives because if you fail to do it you will instantly die.3083984-screens_07

The second issue also follows that the game is very unforgiving in terms of what to do. Once you learn the crotch dash is you literally dashing while pressing down on the D-pad you think you can finally avoid dying from the generators in the Power Plant stage. Well you are wrong in this case.

You see unlike the predecessors of his, you knew what the enemy or buildings hitbox looks like just by staring at it. You will understand this is where you go, this is where you avoid death and in this case you don’t get that. And this isn’t the only stage to do this, almost all the stages have this scenario somewhere in them that creates the issue of instant death that will frustrate and confuse the player to no end.mighty-no-9-screen-4

However the game has some good points, most notably the musical composition which remains very upbeat and the controls are pretty easy to understand as well. So the games faults just end up being bad level design, bad character design, bad dialog, and despite all the money they put into the title this does not have the polish we all were hoping for in terms of a Mega Man game.

Don’t get me wrong, he tried and he probably tried really hard and for that we give him credit. But there is no way I can honestly recommend this title to anyone, not even a die-hard Mega Man fan. It ends up being just a big pile of disappointment.

Sorry guy’s but the Super Fighting Robot we are looking for may never be seen again. At least Capcom released the classics on steam and other consoles again.

Haven Review: DOOM [2016]

Doom_logoDOOM! If you’re a child of the 90s like me, you know exactly what it is. The popular game stayed with all of us for years, with its two-dimensional graphics displayed as three-dimensional rooms.  The game was all about fighting demons, as well as other sorts of monsters coming after you. It was incredibly popular and everyone loved it (apart from the soccer moms who screamed that bloody games are making our children more violent)!    2YYBfaq

Well that was then and this is now, and we have a new DOOM. The game has been reworked for a few years now; even had some closed multiplayer testing. But since it’s finally out we can at long last play and review it!

Thing’s start off fairly interesting, me sitting up from a weird coffin, only to see me shackled down and demons coming at me on all sides. They’re doing the most badass thing; just crushing their skulls into my coffin and breaking out. I quickly break out of a suit and learn the controls, going on a murderous rampage (of demons, no less) to finally leave the room I was in.

It was this first impression that told me I would love this title, because the game flows as if they took the original DOOM and just overhauled the graphics. The jumping, the moving around and the fights you get into felt to me like it was a rebirth of the original game and I absolutely loved it.DOOM-2016-Cacodemon_Plus_1437988255 However their are things that I found a tiny bit strange…mainly the glory kills. But I can understand that, being a new thing and innovation from the original design and concepts of DOOM, and it began to grow on me. The entire game felt so fluid to me, although I am playing on the Xbox One at this point. But I’ll get into that reason in a little bit.

The soundtrack stayed upbeat and hardcore, giving me a nostalgic trip. It was like I was listening to the heaviest of heavy metals as I crushed a demon’s skull in my hand  and watched its eye-balls pop out from between my fingers. I absolutely loved it. However I must mention that while I was enjoying my glorious killing spree, the game felt good overall. I felt like its story aspect was lacking and I was kind of disappointed at that, since they were changing a few things and adding other things.

But despite all this, it felt wonderful. It felt great and it truly felt like I was playing a piece of my childhood again. Although the game is obviously not for kids, let’s face it, some nostalgic parent out there will probably buy it and their kid will get a hold of it and it will create the next generation of DOOM fans.doom-2016_005

Now about what I said earlier in the article regarding playing on the Xbox One. A lot of people have reported this issue, and from my own research I can conclude that the PC port of DOOM is pretty broken for a lot of people. But groups and companies outside are not reporting on this and a lot of gamers have taken to complaining in Indie game development groups because of how broken it is.

As for myself, the title was broken for me as well. The start of the game was playable but if I opened Fraps, Loilo, and hell…even OBS, the game would close or it would give me a black screen in the top right hand corner. Even trying to adjust the graphics to 720p crashed the game and made it hang, and so I attempted to adjust the graphics manually, which also made the game crash.maxresdefault

Eventually I settled on playing it in 1080p and gave up on recording, but the moment I finished the tutorial area the game began to lag to no end and left me at 1 frame per second. This ultimately made me go to the Xbox One version of the game, because programming for a console system is far easier than for PC because the former’s hardware is always the same. But this brings up the point of Bethesda releasing a fairly broken version of DOOM onto the PC, and we are waiting for it to be fixed.
Despite this one major issue about DOOM, the game remains very solid in every way for our review scale, and again I absolutely loved it…even if I couldn’t play it on PC.

Everything about the title screams nostalgia and I continue to look forward to skull-stomping a demonic lord with my big boot!
