Haven Review: Adam Wolfe

The Adam Wolfe game was intriguing. Developers were knowledgeable and planned the game out well.  To start, when first opening the game one knows immediately that it’s a mystery type game. The colors, back ground, decor, and Adam Wolfe himself (star of the game) shows it to be a mystery.  The advice on using headphones is a definite. Adam Wolfe opens up by stating he is an investigator of the super natural. He lost his sister Alley several years earlier and has been searching for her.  Immediately you know this is one of the achievements to be completed….to find his sister.

During the game several characters are introduced and are keys in helping to solve the mystery.  The game pulls you into the drama that unfolds in hoping to find answers and solutions to the end results….finding Alley.  There’s lots of obstacles to overcome and to find.  Some are easy, others are not.

There are four sections to complete before you reach the end.  All four sections have multiple puzzles to complete before you reach the end.  What I found, was the puzzles continued to improve with each section.  In the first section, I noticed some of the puzzles were not very instrumental in explanations as to what the player is supposed to do in completing them.  Took a few minutes to figure out there was actually a tutorial which I personally did not know was there till midway through the first section.  Once I learned of the tutorial it was easier to understand what each puzzle was about and there were also solutions to the more difficult ones.  I do feel it would be beneficial to add this to the opening of each game so players know where to find help if they need it.

The second section was similar but much improved on how to solve and complete the puzzles.  I really enjoyed the seek and find items.  some items were in different colors and it took me a few moments to figure out why.  Example of this would be hammer in red, vase in red, and other object words like ball in white.  The red meant to take the hammer, break open the vase and grab the object (ball) inside which one could not find.  Please understand I don’t exactly remember what the object inside was so the ball is just an example. You’ll need to play the game your self and find out.

The third and fourth part of the game had improved significantly on understanding the puzzles.  What I found different from most puzzles was the fact this particular one had you getting into a zodiac and diving under the water by the Golden gate bridge.  I’ve never had a puzzle do that before.  Being an old diver myself, I really enjoyed that.  The only puzzles I did not find appealing, at least for me, was the fights.  It was not well received as I had no idea what I was supposed to do.  there was a bar on top the screen with a fist.  The assailant had me pinned and I had to keep hitting the button and keeping it above a certain point to win.  I actually went to the help screen to figure out what I was supposed to do but it was not very specific so after about ten minutes of pushing the button I was finally out of that mess.  I do feel this needs to be addressed along with one other things (next paragraph) and the game will be perfect.

After completing all the sections I was looking forward to seeing Adam reunited with his Sister Alley.  Instead, Adam was stuck inside an hour glass (which had to be broken to break the cycle) with no way to break it!  His Sister kept apologizing as she was “tricked” into saying his name which was supposedly his demise.  The ending was not what I expected.  More or less a cliff hanger.  After finally completing all those sections I felt the ending should of been better.  It would of been nice to put the demons in their place, rescue the sister and be reunited.  Perhaps Adams little sister, after being taken by these demons and forced to be part of their world when she obviously wanted nothing to do with them, could of been beneficial to Adam in future games.  She could of been a big help to Adam in his supernatural detective work.  Instead all we see is Adam dying in an hour glass, an upset sister apologizing for putting him there, and all his detective friends racing in.  Was he rescued or not?  Are they reunited or not?  Think the story needs a better ending.  Other then that I thought it was a very good game.

Haven Review: Mafia III

mafia_iii_transparent_background_logo

This is my first Mafia game and I am going into this knowing nothing of the previous titles apart from what my friends and colleagues have told me about the series and honestly. I am really enjoying it, I should note however for a lot of people the game has been incredibly buggy since the launch and a lot of people have been quite angry about its lacking frame-rates although. The frame rates have now been rectified the rest of the issues have not.20161008000058_1 Now at the very start of the game they tell you straight out this game is basically meant to be an accurate representation for the time period that it is in and depicts scenes of extreme racism and hatred towards people of colored skin. Its pretty bold in it too and doesn’t sugar coat it calling the protagonist Lincoln Clay a nigger, negro and pretty much every other racial slur under the sun and for a good part of the game this is a huge story and focal point and they executed it very well.

It even has extreme versions if you visit white neighborhoods the cops will start harassing you, and attacking you for doing nothing at all. I was driving down the road and they kept running their car into me before requesting backup and having me chased out.

But lets not lose too much focus here this is a review after all. The games overall controls are pretty solid although the timing when using items is off and that creates issues. When I am in a game like Grand Theft Auto V I can easily switch between things, and heal in this the delay often gets me killed and when you die you lose half the money you have gotten up to that point which is quite annoying to say the least.20161008153541_1

The soundtrack to the game is mainly of old classic rock from the time period, like songs such as “Help me Rhonda” and “Respect” and since I am a fan of classic rock and grew up with it due to my parents I have a good regard for that and the blue’s. My personal thoughts is the music is great, amazing, and I absolutely love it. Since I don’t got MP3’s on my computer for those songs I just kinda idle in my car now and listen to them.20161009012255_1

As it goes for visuals the game has been quite buggy for a lot and if you try running things on high and medium even if you have a newer PC it can become incredibly laggy. I was forced down to a crippling 12 FPS a second because of it and when trying to fix the graphic settings on the loader I could never get it to save. Which brings me to the menu for the game. It ends up being slightly confusing to a new comer to the series and it was hard to navigate and although I figured it out. It did present a fair amount of issues, in the end however I did discover that the game has another graphic menu inside the game once its loaded and from there I was able to fix the graphical issues I had. Putting the entire game on low basically fixed every single issue I had.20161008040836_1

Even on low though the game remains visually breath-taking and the cut-scenes remain flawless. If anyone is having issues I recommend putting that it on low. Hell I am running a ASUS GTX590 the kind that burns out easily and was crappily made and it manages to push a solid 30-45 FPS so it’s fairly well optimized for older equipment such as mine although numerous people are complaining they can’t play it due to poor optimization on AMD CPU’s and I feel kinda bad for those who can’t enjoy this.20161009163257_1

In conclusion though the game is amazing, as a game that entails my introduction to the Mafia series. I found it very enjoyable and an accurate representation of racism of the past and of some area’s in Florida where I grew up. But it also stands as a harsh reminder that if we hate / fear people for the color of their skin, heritage, beliefs, or genders. We just continue to let Racism grow in America and in the world.

We as gamers, no as people need to recognize these issues and take a stand against them, and to show people this way of thinking is wrong and will always be wrong.

Haven Review: Kerbal Space Program

kerbal_space_program_high_res_logo  Now I just want to say we are playing the Kerbal Space Program on the Xbox One and from what we can see its exactly like the PC port of the title, accept its now on consoles.

The main goal of the game is as you guessed it set up a space program for your little Kerbals and hopefully return them safely to earth by building different rockets and sending them in to space to explore other planets and to try to return home from successful missions with your crew intact.2862020-kerbalspaceprogram-3

Accomplishing this task is no easy feat as the controls are a bit rough to control or at least for me they are. Building the spaceships is generally the best part of the game as you can come up with some wicked designs before launching your little Kerbals to their inevitable death, I mean successful mission, yes that is what I meant a successful mission.kerbal_space_program_desktop_by_timmon26-d66qqlw

Now the music for the game is laid back and sets the tone for a game where you will feel like you are grinding for hours on end. Much like what you would encounter in a massively multiplayer online game. The music isn’t bad, and it’s not good but it’s there to get you into a repetitive mood and it does just that because there is a lot of trial and error involved in the gameplay process.

Growth in the game is fairly straight forward also you just start with a little garage and you keep working your way up until you are exploring the cosmos.kerbal-space-program-10-700x403

I do love the space exploration element of the game as it reminds me of the same kind of exploration in SPORE just not as big as the way SPORE had planned it. The Kerbals themselves are visually amusing as well and I really love their derpy expressions.

Personally I always wondered about the game’s popularity and I can totally understand why people love this title and how it’s ended up getting console ports because of it. The game is good and it’s really enjoyable.

In the end we can draw the conclusion that the game is as good as it is on the PC. But now on the consoles its fun and its enjoyable and best of all it has controller support for people like me.nlrxct1221q-940x528So check it out when you can on the Xbox One or the Play Station 4 as the title is totally worth it.
