Haven Review: Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil its one of the classics of gaming, I remember picking up a copy of Resident Evil code Veronica from a pawn shop as a child and proceeding to get the crap scared out of me for a good while afterwards. Resident Evil 4 continues that tradition the same way it did then, with jump scares.

Now over time Capcom has innovated and and improved upon the series some results being good and some results being poorly received and now even though its been out for a good while Capcom has revised and refurbished Resident Evil 4 much like a lot of the series up to this point.

Now one of the first aspects of the game I noticed they improved upon that I for one am quite happy about is that you can freely save without the need to have printer ink and for the record yes, I haven’t played a Resident Evil since code Veronica.

However there is one thing I deeply loath about Resident Evil 4. I can handle the mini-bosses, the new approach to enemies, and the finishers but I cannot stand the whole escort missions. I grew up in the age of Golden Eye and and horrible escort missions and even though they improved upon the AI I still cannot stand escort missions and I go into them with a deep passionate loathing for them.

The combat seems infinity better than what it has been where you stand around swinging a knife around in mid-air. Although you do remain stationary almost all the time when firing a weapon so where it visually looks different and more fluid its still pretty bad in terms of combat. Although we can’t be too brutal with it as it is a product of its time and newer games look and feel a lot more fluid.

Music for the game remains as good as always, and as a fan of Capcom’s work over the years they remain pretty good in giving a perfect musical score to their video games from Mega Man, to Devil May Cry its always spot on to help set the tone and the fluidity of the game.

My only issues with the game besides the escort mission is the horrible character dialog it feels poorly conceived and to be fair not many decent Capcom games for that era have had very good dialog written for the characters.

The game ultimately outshines its predecessors in some good ways, but that doesn’t mean it has a flawless experience. Its nice to see Capcom bringing its older titles to the Xbox One, Play Station 4, and the PC. But I just wish instead of just increasing the resolution and updating the visuals. I would hope that they would also patch things or do a complete overhaul fixing some bugs.

The game is good though, and I’m gonna continue to play this.

Haven Review: Rise and Shine

First and foremost in the review for Rise and Shine I just want to make one thing incredibly clear to the developers of this lovely but very punishing game.

I loathe you, I don’t hate you, I just loathe you. The game is both enjoyable and dreadfully punishing with non-stop re-spawns and very mellow story.

That being said we are now heading into spoiler territory folks! Now at the start of the game you are introduced as the young boy named Rise who meets the legendary hero of Game-world after a evil space grunt is killed before him, as he is killed the legendary hero takes a mortal blow and he hands the legendary gun Shine to Rise, hence the name of the game.

The Legendary hero goes on to explain that the bearer of the gun will have unlimited re-spawns and cannot die now, to which the kid asked “Why aren’t you re-spawning?” before the legendary hero dies on the spot.

Now the game as you progress through is loaded to the brim with every kind of video game reference you can think of some of which confused me, and others that were so obvious I overlooked them, from statues of Princess Peach, and Kid Ikarus, all the way to jumping over barrels to get by certain stages the game is loaded to a unhealthy level with video game references.

One of the things I enjoyed so much about the game is actually its very dull and but amusing story that it has unfolding. Yes, you read that right I was truly enjoying the dull story-line they cooked up for the game and It was pretty funny at times too and not in a pathetic way, just in a that is a very creative way.

Its nice to see a game like that with some originality despite its very dull approach, unlike other game companies who just stick to what they know and don’t trust to do anything bold or creative. That really stood out to me.

Now avoiding anymore spoilers I want to say that the soundtrack to the game is actually really sweet, and by itself I kind of recommend the game because it really have that vibe that helps bring it all to life. From seeing Flappy bird fly on the screen, to have the Duck Hunt Dog show up and screw me over.

But I should point out for the game that the controls are pretty abysmal and I think it was by design, to add a level of difficulty to the game. If you have a game of infinite re-spawns you wouldn’t expect the game to be easy and they didn’t skimp on the difficulty. Although if you do want difficult they have a “Iron Man” mode for the game as well besides Normal because honestly, get good skrub.

I however will not be using Iron man mode, because I am indeed a skrub, so I will leave that to the developers to show off if they can even do it.

So let us review real quick! A very dull but amusing story, hard to use controls, great soundtrack, a solid design, incredibly rage inducing, and let’s not forget the peace of resistance the overwhelming easter eggs for the game, it’s like it bleeds One Up’s.

Conclusion though the game is pretty game, and I have had a wonderful time playing it despite the rage educing coma it will probably put me into by the end of the week.

Haven Review: Kill Me Again

   Kill Me Again is a free mobile zombie puzzle shooter. Your character moves on rails, backwards as zombies advance on you. Your job is to match 3 colors of bullet casings in order to damage to them. The more casings you line up, the more damage you do. You level up as you go, and get skill points to unlock new skills. Some of these are straight bonuses to your stats, others are combo and chain skills. If you get 5 of the same color in a row, you activate one of those skills. It’s all fairly straightforward.

Unlike standard match-3 games, in Kill Me Again you can drag colors from anywhere on the board to anywhere else. This is useful for setting up those 5 block combos, but slows you down so that the zombies will have a chance to eat you. At first this seemed like an interesting way to mix up the stale match-3 mechanic, but after a while it became just as mundane.

One fairly interesting feature is “critical hits”. You can hold off on making a match until a zombie is right next to you and starts to glow red. Make the match at this time, and you’re rewarded with bonus damage. I feel like this was a way to switch up the idea that you should make as many matches as quickly as possible, and put a little bit of timing into the game. While this is a great idea in theory, I found that the bonus damage wasn’t worth the wait. It was much more effective to just make as many matches as quickly as possible. There are bosses in the game, and they have weaknesses to specific colors of blocks. This is one of the better mechanics in the game. You have to decide whether or not to go for those weaknesses or go for matches that activate abilities.

My complaints are small enough so that I wouldn’t say the game is bad; rather it’s simply more of a standard puzzle shooter. The place where this garbage really starts to smell is in it’s micro-transactions. For each level you play, you need pills…two pills per level per try (except boss levels, which cost three). At the very beginning of the game you get 10 pills. You get 14 more from the “Day 1” present box. There are present boxes for the first 8 days of the game. These give you pills, money and the occasional consumable item. The game will periodically give you more pills, seemingly at random. So after you blow through all your pills (about an hour into the game) you’ll need to spend some time waiting around until they refresh.

Of course, you can spend money. You can trade real currency for in-game gold bars. You get 10 of these for $1 (USD), for example. You can spend gold bars on numerous things. The first item will probably be pills for 10 gold bars. You get 10 pills. That’s right. Five more fucking levels of play for a dollar. That’s like 5 minutes. You need to spend a dollar if you want to play for 5 more minutes. You can also spend on new weapons and consumables. Weapons will run you about 5 dollars worth of gold. They are also needed in the game to complete rescue quests, which give you jack-all in exchange for your gold bars. Luckily, if you play long enough you might pick up one or two bars from fulfilling challenges and achievements. So these micro-transactions take the game from a standard puzzle shooter to a greedy cash grab.
