Zacerons 2016 game awards

2016 is officially over. Therefor I can now make a list about the best games and worst games of 2016. This list is proof that 2016 was good year indeed. The hand picked games from this list is all based on the ones I’ve reviewed this year.

2016

No man’s sky:

An under-engineered, over hyped piece of software. Which runs like a three eyed, one legged man, hobbling on thin ice. Needless to say it runs terrible and I can’t get it above thirty frames per second. Despite everything setting all the settings to low. There is also that terrible loading whenever I start the game. Despite what Hello games will have you believe. That pesky star journey is a loading screen. It even says, loading shaders at the bottom. Slow loading times is a good indication that the game code is crap.

“Fix the damn performance issues already!”

Overwatch:

I still play it despite my short temper, questionable aiming abilities and my raging murder boner. It’s a game about holding an objective against colorful weirdos, with skills on par with mine. Whom are more concerned with chasing kills and trashing scenery, than to push the wagon up a hill. Yes it is fun, terrible and awesome, all at the same time.

Everspace:

Rogue lite meets space exploration, with a high probability of fiery death. While being having an armada of murderous and very angry lizard people son my tail. As I traverse the randomly generated galaxy. It is the most beautiful rendition of space I’ve ever seen within a game.

Enter the Gungeon:

Charming and fun, where everything is a pun related to ammo or a gun. A game about exploring randomly generated dungeons and killing bosses, while trying to get the gun that can erase the past. Hard to wrong with a sizzling hot, table flipping bullet hell.20160420200000_1

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun:

Ninjas flip out and kill people, it is a proven scientific fact. At least according the interweb. Around the time of fire arms, where the shogun ruled and Japan was almost peaceful. A cleaver ploy to reignite the war is brewing and a team of ninjas are set out to thwart it. Someone finally decided to make a top down stealth game, I’ve not seen many of those since Commandos was new.

Xcom 2:

Aliens have taken over the earth and the resistance needs my help, in order to liberate Earth. This game improves on everything the previous release did and a lot more.  Though adding a mission timer was probably not the smartest thing to do. Overall a fun turn based strategy game.

Owlboy:

It took nine years to get it done and I’d say it was worth it. It looks fantastic and is immensely  fun to play. Starring Otus; A boy, whom also is an owl, with a flying cape and several useful companions, fighting menacing mechanical pirates.20161030235823_1

Worth the wait

Redout:

Strap yourself into a rocked, held aloft with anti gravity. While trying to avoid a fiery death as the track blast by. It’s the fastest and most polished racing game I’ve played in 2016. It’s just fun speed through a loop at 300 km/t. The music is good as well and apparently it can be used with virtual reality.

Earth Defense Force 4.1 Shadow of new despair:

Finally a proper EDF game on pc. A last I can smash the bug horde under my heels,  without slowdowns and horrible performance issues. It’s one of the few third person games where you actually face down an overwhelming horde of enemies. 20160725160931_1

The Incredible Baron:

While not the most played game on my list, it does sport a very good soundtrack, which I’ve been listening to a lot. Especially when writing my list for games of 2016. The game it self is not bad at all and looks good. It’s just not my cup of tea. Despite the quirky fun characters.20160804095119_1

The Final Station:

All aboard the man train to Armageddon. It is a fun game about managing a train, explore abandoned locations and keeping passengers alive, while the nefarious plot unfolds.20160825001136_1

Clustertruck:

The floor is lava is a simple game about not touching the floor.  Only this time around the the floor is composed of speeding trucks and questionable physics. It’s fun as long as you can manage extreme first person platforming.20161003183511_1

Bird of Light

A very fun run and jump game, with a deep and slightly depressing story about a very real problem India is faced with.20160724194007_1

Haven Revies: Redoutredout

Redout is one of the fastest racing games I’ve ever played on Steam. There is a serious lack of fast futuristic racers. Then again racing games are of a mixed bunch and is usually way too limited. Especially when it comes to AI and interesting tracks. Redout does deliver a fairly complete experience. 20161123063644_1

I just really enjoy speeding through corkscrews, at break neck speeds. Incidentally this is where the title comes from. When curves and speed becomes too great, the screen is likely to take one a red hue, while the vision starts to blur. There is a limit to what the human body can take. Plus it makes for an interesting mechanic. Along with the ability to adjust the pitch while going through a loop.. It’s something that has to be done, otherwise I’ll just scrape up my vehicle against the tarmac. Since the hover craft is both fast and brittle, any bump and scrape will hurt. Apparently there are powerups that can affect the opposition, however they are quite frankly boring. 20161123064704_1

Redouts campaign mode is composed of several companies to pick from. Each have individual stats and specifications on their speeders. The company picked will keep clambering for attention by offer money deals and contracts, which all relate to upgrades.  20161123065350_1The bags of money thrown at me I mostly use to buy upgrades and improving them. Progress equals higher velocities and harder races. Despite my best effort I’m not very good at winning in this game though. I have a really hard time handling the cornering and timing. 20161123064606_1 The cramped track width does not do me any favors. Then again I do have the habit of driving in first person instead of third. That could be a contributing factor. The boss levels are one of the thing that really make Readout shine. These are long hard races, with portals, that teleport the player to another location quite seamlessly. 20161123064958_1

Graphically the game is very polished and sleek. With some interesting track designs and some wicked loops. With various cool themes. Redout has all the hallmarks of a fantastic racing game. Tight cornering, drifting, catch up mechanics and some upgrades. The one thing it really lacks is a way to trash the opponents and more impact sound effects. I find t a bit too muted. The soundtrack is also quite good and upbeat, with some very catchy tunes. Being able to adjust the pitch, but pressing the stick back and froth adds some extra depth to the mechanics, preventing it from becoming a mindless arcade experience. Redout also comes with Steam achievements, which is always good. VR support I can’t comment on, since I don’t have it and a very functional multiplayer mode.

Haven Editorial: Gary Napper leave’s Sony

gary-napper-profileGary Napper one of the great game designers of our time has left Sony UK two months ago to pursue his gaming career to even new heights and has started a new job as Game Director at Supermassive games in Guildford and will be working on VR technologies.

What could this mean for the future of Supermassive games? Considering the highlights of Mr.Napper’s career to date it could mean an awful lot as he helped breath life into one of the scariest horror games to date known as Alien: Isolation and considering he is going to be working with virtual reality technology, its probably safe to say he will be putting people into the hospital from heart attacks in the near future.

But it also brings out the question of why he is leaving Sony UK and honestly it is most likely to further his own career goals as a game designer. Supermassive games has been responsible for Until Dawn which has taken the Sony console world by storm for its amazing story telling as well as its overall design and with him signing onto a company such as Supermassive games we can honestly only expect good things to come from this.

Much like how when Hideo Kojima left Konami for Sony we all know only good things will come from it.  dontrun

As a fan of Gary Nappers work and horror games in general I look forward to see what new things Gary Napper will be bringing to the party to drive people insane and let the beads of sweat drop in fear from his future works as he leads a team to help develop and create new ways to scare people.  We can only imagine what evil’s he will create while working at Supermassive games and with the way things are going he may create the future successor to the Silent Hill style of games because we all know Konami will never have a good solid plan in horror genre games.Client_logos_0000s_0026_supermassivegames.pngBut whatever the future holds we hope Gary Napper will continue to shine as one of the great game developers of our time and continue to make really amazing games and I hope that he continues to create some amazing triple A titles that will continue to blow the minds off everyone who plays his games. As well as those who get to watch people playing his games from let’s plays online.
