Haven Editorial: Gary Napper leave’s Sony

gary-napper-profileGary Napper one of the great game designers of our time has left Sony UK two months ago to pursue his gaming career to even new heights and has started a new job as Game Director at Supermassive games in Guildford and will be working on VR technologies.

What could this mean for the future of Supermassive games? Considering the highlights of Mr.Napper’s career to date it could mean an awful lot as he helped breath life into one of the scariest horror games to date known as Alien: Isolation and considering he is going to be working with virtual reality technology, its probably safe to say he will be putting people into the hospital from heart attacks in the near future.
But it also brings out the question of why he is leaving Sony UK and honestly it is most likely to further his own career goals as a game designer. Supermassive games has been responsible for Until Dawn which has taken the Sony console world by storm for its amazing story telling as well as its overall design and with him signing onto a company such as Supermassive games we can honestly only expect good things to come from this.

Much like how when Hideo Kojima left Konami for Sony we all know only good things will come from it.  dontrun

As a fan of Gary Nappers work and horror games in general I look forward to see what new things Gary Napper will be bringing to the party to drive people insane and let the beads of sweat drop in fear from his future works as he leads a team to help develop and create new ways to scare people.  We can only imagine what evil’s he will create while working at Supermassive games and with the way things are going he may create the future successor to the Silent Hill style of games because we all know Konami will never have a good solid plan in horror genre games.Client_logos_0000s_0026_supermassivegames.pngBut whatever the future holds we hope Gary Napper will continue to shine as one of the great game developers of our time and continue to make really amazing games and I hope that he continues to create some amazing triple A titles that will continue to blow the minds off everyone who plays his games. As well as those who get to watch people playing his games from let’s plays online.

Haven Review: Coast Guard

First up is our disclaimer. We received this game for review purposes only, and as such all opinions in this review are our own. No money has been exchanged for this review.

maxresdefaultsThe United States Coast Guard (USCG) defends freedom and liberty over the seas, and protects its borders. The same holds true for other countries and say what you will, they are good at doing their job. I speak from experience in this case because my mother and brother both serve in the Coast Guard.

When I saw a game depicting the USCG I jumped at the chance to review such a title and honestly, I am pretty disappointed. First and foremost, they don’t give the Coast Guard in the game a proper nation and second, there are just so many bugs in the game.

It feels rushed and cheaply made with horrible mechanics that really mess up the overall game-play experience. The first issue I had with the game was the actual dialog. It feels forced at times and the story overall feels very weak. The second issue I had was with the mechanics relating to object interaction. You have to open your backpack and select the item you want to use, as well as the object it should be used on. It quite literally took me 5+ minutes just to get one thing working properly. I know I recorded a video of me playing for everyone’s sake, and its pretty disappointing.Image835-585x300

However I will say this: the music for the game and the voice acting is incredibly good, and I am very happy about that. I also loved the easter eggs they through in. It took me a minute to recognize the sound but its a retro-styled Doctor Who theme that plays in the ship that you are on.

I loved how the ship would flow in the ocean as well, but its overall speed (especially for these kinds of vessels) is horribly slow and I feel that they did not research enough for the vessels they used in the game. The ship itself has very little in common with actual Coast Guard vessels, at least in comparison to the USCG. I’ve actually been on board a real ship and partied with the people there. The ships are quite huge, both in width and length. At one point in the game you can freely explore your ship and I am so disappointed with the inaccuracies.

hamilton2Yes, I know they’re trying to make a game based on the Coast Guard, but when you don’t put enough effort into your research and don’t go the extra mile it shows in the quality of the work. I think though the most notorious issue I had in the game was when I was at the very back of the ship exploring. When a wave came along, it pushed the vessel up to the point where I was touching the water. That would send me back to the captain’s chair, which means I had to go back and explore the ship all over again. At one point it just started doing it randomly!

So long story short, is this game worth checking out? Honestly no, it’s not. I wouldn’t recommend it. Not because of its inaccuracies, but because of how extremely buggy it is.

Anyway here is the video. Feel free to enjoy and I apologize for the low volume; my microphone was acting up.

Haven Editorial: Two arrested at Pokemon World Tournament

pokemonworldTwo men were arrested at the Pokemon World Championships in Boston, USA following a tip off from security staff.

The two men who were due to compete in the finals were eighteen year old Kevin Norton and twenty seven year old James Stumbo.631x__medium They drove from Iowa to participate in the event but have since been arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as other firearms the Boston Police have stated.

Superintendent Paul Fitzgerald, Commander of the Boston Police district’s Bureau of intelligence and analysis, praised the Pokemon staff for their commitment to the safety of the players at the event.

He went on to describe the arrested pair and their weapons as a very real threat.

“The BPD detectives and collaborating agencies did a great job in the stop and prevention of a potential tragedy,”

He said and earlier this week James Stumbo had posted a picture of his car with two guns on the boot on a Facebook post at the start of the week. 1399733205780156819

The championships, which took place at the weekend were invitation only and usually brings in roughly four hundred thousand entries each year according to the Pokemon Company.

The best players in the TCG and handheld divisions from more than thirty different countries take part in the event competing for top prizes of scholarship money, trophies and merchandise.

Personally I am happy that everyone is okay, being a old Pokemon player I have had to deal with bullies and trouble that has come along before but. Seeing as how it was actual players that wanted to start trouble this time it sits very unsettling for me.

Let us come to terms with this we got to thank Pokemon Company for keeping everyone safe and understanding that people like this will continue to come in and try to ruin things and all we can do is hope and pray as well as prepare that none of which we fear will come to pass in other games such as Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic the Gathering and event big venue gatherings not to mention Pokemon again..

Its like if Comic-Con was attacked by gunman but for Pokemon players. To help give everyone a solid idea of just how bad it could be. Hopefully though other companies like Konami, and Wizards will take heed to how Pokemon Company handled this situation and have a plan for it as well as Comic Con.

As for the players in question who would go out and do something like this, I feel a great pity for them. They had the potential to actually participate in this but choose to take the latter path and almost ruined the fun for everyone. I hope those two understand that is not how you handle any situation at all. A peaceable solution is the best solution and those who aim to hurt others in the end will only hurt themselves…
