Haven Reviews: Streets of Rogue

 

After the new major enacted some new and crazy laws, several disgruntled people in Streets of Rogue decided to form a rebel alliance. Which the player character joined, in order to bring down the oppressor.

Streets of Rogue is a game where each level have a theme and is randomly assembled, with a series of objectives. Which has to be completed in order to exit the floor to get to the next stage. Every now and then the game will also throw in special hazards, such as a killer robot.

Despite the pixelated graphics and simple character models, everything has a lot of charm in Street of Rogue, it’s also violent and sadistic as all hell. With several radically different characters to unlock and several ways to complete each objective. A stealthy approach is just as legit and feasible, as going in guns blazing. Or as I like to do, have random hoodlums trigger and run after me, and accidentally hitting the wrong target in the crossfire. It’s a glorious carnage to behold. The most insane so far is the pesky time bombs, which will bring down the entire floor when the time runs out. Virtually anything in the game can and will be destroyed, wrecked and thrashed.

Naturally there is an RPG element to the game and currency that can buy new options back at the rebel headquarters.

Since each unlockable character has a different approach, I just have to mention how awesome it is to play as a naked, alien baby body snatcher. Whom can take over the body of anyone, as long as their back is unexposed. Or the doctor who cant use a gum, but will gladly use chloroform to knock out anyone. A true pacifist indeed.

Streets of Rogue is very clearly centered around coop gameplay, since you will die a lot and I know for certain that I did indeed die several times. Other players in the game can revive the fallen one at the cost of half the health bar. Not to mention being a distraction, to leave that unprotected back exposed. Despite being in the very early stages with a lot of content yet to be added, it works like a charm and does everything it sets out to do. Not to mention it has gamepad support and is addictive as all hell. I will gladly recommend this game to anyone whom like rogue lite games, a ton of options and a bloody chaotic mess. With a kick ass soundtrack, which can be bought separately.

First impressions are important and Lanze Games deliver a quite fantastic kickstarter, highlighting their quite interesting game indeed.

I’m a sucker for rogue games, despite the concept being built upon luck and dying way too much. The concept is simple and easy to grasp. The world have set places and locations, while the rest is randomly generated within the world. A fully narrative experience is also promised by Pixel Princess and that is sweet. Most such games have virtually no story what so ever, aside from some random journals and the setting itself. Then again half the fun is the story that unfolds dynamically as you play.

Music is also key to any good game and I’m quite sure they have a skilled music maker on their team. The soundtrack can be bought and there is even a retro inspired version too boot. I just hope they have flack. It has everything to do with the quality. I just have a different taste. Never the less, from what I can see within the trailer and the information provided by the developer. The framework is already there and looks fun. Great many indie developers these days have a bad habit of underselling their product or doing a bad half baked effort at making a good game. If anything consider Pixel princess a lesson in how to show, tell and sell.

The art direction is positively lovely and full of charm. It’s done in that cutesy chibi style and kept consistent. If their concept art is anything to go by, they know exactly what they are doing by embracing pixels and nice animations. I also adore their silly promotion comics.

The game is already Greenlit, however it needs a little bit more support in order to deliver the best possible experience. Such as coop. Something I value greatly in any game I run across. There is also a slew of rewards for those whom are willing to back Pixel Princess.

20161209015035_1Necrodnce turns two very unlikely genres, into one sound combination. The music truly moves me, forcing me to follow it’s rhythm, as I venture into the Necrodancers crypt. A place of funky music, murderous monsters and dance floors full of treasure. The in-game music literally moves to the beat of the hearth. Within these dark dungeons, the rhythm is law and very few maleficent monsters miss a beat. Be it a humble slime stuck in a pattern, or a big bad burly boss. Even though Necrodancer is a highly addictive rogue like game, where treasure and monsters are randomly generated. 20161209022328_1 Most enemies have a fairly modest life bar, where every attack can be avoided if the timing is correct. Which makes it a game purely about skill, despite random elements. I’ve yet to actually see any hidden traps or enemies that are impossible to see. Which is quite lovely indeed. Crypt of the Necrodancer, also have a bucket load of unlockables, such as characters, modes for practicing against monsters and a plethora of fancy items. 20161209023404_1

That being said death is most certainly permanent. And the only currency that carry over are diamonds. A shiny pointy rock used for unlocking extra items and powerups that will show up randomly in the dungeon. I’m quite surprised that there is a couch coop feature, now that is a recipe for a deadly disaster. A true challenge for anyone involved. But I have not done much of that, since I live in the middle of nowhere. Within this musical canopy, there is also a fully voice acted plot, with some simple cut scenes. It’s a quite gripping story indeed.

I picked up Necrodancer on Steam, it’s a fairly decent prized game, that provides, the player with several hours of gameplay and some real tricky challenges. Which makes this a poor Steam Achievement farming game. The underlying mechanics is a deceptively simple and well thought out. The direction keys moves the character around and if you walk towards and enemy, an attack will occur if close enough instead. Each of the stages are connected by an exit, blocked by a beefy boss. It is a game after all.

The most negative thing I can really point out is the slow main hub, that follows the same rhythm movement the whole game is built around.

It’s an indie game, that actually has support for a dancepad. Those fancy usb connected floor controllers, with several arrows on it. As and added bonus the game becomes easier by using one of those. Not that I have ever had a reason to invest in one.
Danny Baranowsky, is no stranger to making a good game soundtrack and it shows. The music is the best clearly the best thing within the game, and can be bought separately. Or use a custom               track if that is what you fancy instead. Even the shopkeeper sings along to the song. However I truly loathe the boink sound the arrow trap makes.

Over all a very sound and fun challenge, that I just have to recommend everyone trying at some point.
