Haven Review: Seasons After Fall

Seasons After fall, in the most simplistic of ways it is a beautifully orchestrated game, from the majesty of its art-work to the very core elements of its game-play. There was another game I reviewed a while back called Ori and the Blind Forest and this game is most definitely on the same level of greatness as something produced by Microsoft Studios.

You play a seed, or you are often referred to as a Seed not really sure in this aspect because at a junction the story presents a narrative that argues this point. But anyways, once you arrive you are told to visit four different Sanctuary’s and meet each Guardian as you progress through each stage. The game involves basic puzzle solving, combined with stunning artwork, soothing melodies, platform gaming and lastly simply perfect narrative.

It is a fairly simple game and I finished it with a hundred percent completion in nearly eight hours being generous with time as well. But just because its simple doesn’t mean it is any less enjoyable, the game orchestrates itself in a manner that is both enticing and provocative to keep the players entertained. If you are a young gamer and you don’t want to expose them to more violent games, or any game that in general has violence in it. Than this would be the ideal game for you and your kids.

As the game has no enemies to combat and it relies heavily on its story telling capabilities and stunning artwork. However I will say this, for younger people the puzzles will in general keep the children occupied as they try to solve them. I found a few someone challenging myself which is why it took me eight hours to complete the game instead of finishing it quicker.

But I do have to note at times the controller felt very ridged and not my controller by the actual character controls itself. If you do not maintain momentum as you play through the game the character becomes a bit more listless and sluggish making solving puzzles that require jumping a bit harder.

I also encountered a bug in the game during its second phase, I guess you could call it that triggered my vibration settings on the controller and never shut them down. So now I got a glorified neck massager to help me stay at ease. Although this can be a bit tedious in general if you just enjoy having it vibrate when you jump or fall.

The only real solution to this problem is that you can turn it off in the settings menu but it completely turns the function off, if you turn it back on it will just continue vibrating regardless and not stop at all.

The game overall though is very solid, with stages that change for each segment you complete, a amazing mechanic to control the seasons to help solve puzzles like the Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons, and a beautiful and artistic world that feels as if it was painted onto my screen for me to enjoy.

Despite the game being really short, I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to play a very relaxing game. Seasons after Fall is more about the experience rather than the challenge and I’ve found it very fulfilling both as a game and as an art piece.

Haven Review: Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R

A little late then never, we got our hands on Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R on Steam and it’s time to give it our review.

Now right from the start the opening cutscene seems really well done, showing off yet again the characters you expect to see in the Guilty Gear franchise; from Sol Badguy to Ky, and Bridget as well the notorious transvestite that has had many a young boy questioning their sexuality. Nah, I’m kidding, but when they reveal Bridget as a guy it does get pretty hilarious.Guilty-Gear-XX-Accent-Core-Plus-R-not-work Now once we get to the menu I’m slightly confused, as I have music blaring into my headset and it’s really hard to navigate and focus with it. But at long last I found the options menu, only to discover the sound is not there for whatever reason. I noticed afterwards that the sound is a completely separate option, and lowered the sound. It seems ridiculous though, not to have all the options in one spot.

You would think that with a port they would do a little more fine-tuning and make sure it’s all good, but they couldn’t be bothered with that. So after that, we move into the training mode where we just get a feel for the controls. Just like all the previous Guilty Gear titles, there is nothing wrong with them. The game controls fine and it’s very responsive. In fact I’d go as far as to say it responds better than the previous titles did, and was really easy to pick up.GG1-620x

So we break into Story Mode playing as my favorite character, Ky (mainly because of his notable blue and white outfit that is the reverse of my own coat). Loading up with Ky I get a feel for the story and its general setup is a bit disappointing. They just move the characters’ faces over the top of the screen so signify who is talking, before going to the combat. The most ridiculous part about the entire thing is that there is a robotic Ky now who begins to shout almost religiously that data is the only truth of the universe. GG3-620xBut the robotics Ky designs is literally one of the worst things I have ever seen in general for anime-styled character, as well as it using the trope that because it was based off the original and it’s a robot it must be superior.

Conclusion: though the game is pretty solid for a fighting-style title, it ultimately lacks the appeal of a promising story. It also suffers from poor menu management. Other than that, it remains solid overall.

Haven Review: Typing of the Dead: Overkill

First up is our disclaimer. We received this game for review purposes only, and as such all opinions in this review are our own. No money has been exchanged for this review.

A crude game with stilted dialogue, an overly dramatic narrator and a B-movie plot at best. Just the way the developers intended. Two cops and two girls are after the notorious criminal scumbag Papa Caesar, who flooded the streets with foul stinking creatures covered with putrid skin in various states of decay. As most people should know by now, undead humans make for a poor enemy, and in most cases I truly loath to have them in a game. However in this case it works, since they for the most part only attack one at a time. They’re still extremely generic. On a side note, I don’t know what the “G” stands for.

2016-02-27_00032The goal is to kill a horde of enemies without missing, thus breaking the combo, resulting in a lower high-score. Each hostile thing on the screen has a word on it and the creatures will only die when the player is done typing the word. Hench the title of the game. The player types things to death and they are mostly undead. As an added bonus there is a multiplayer mode, and yet another mode as well for people who like the more classic House of the Dead style of play. The only difference is that the light gun is exchanged for a mouse! For those who are really hard-boiled, a Wii mote or a gun-con could probably be connected somehow. There is a lot of replayability through different difficulties and finding the hidden goodies around the levels; not to mention playing with a friend locally or online.

The sound is okay, and the music is not bad. I also love the narrator. However the game is seriously lacking in the sound effect department and could use some polish here and there. If there is one thing with the sound design, it’s the lack of sound effects. Sure there are some, but those are few and used over and over. Also I’m not entirely sure the graphics are intended to look so crude. Luckily the soundtrack is quite nice. The bosses are okay, if not a bit boring with their attacks and visuals. However that is mostly nitpicking. After all, the game does not take itself seriously at all and that is all right by me. Reality is quite overrated, after all. In order to spice up the murdering, various bonuses and pickups are littered throughout the levels. This includes the ever-so-fun slow motion pickup, even if it has the habit of slowing down dialogue when the heroes transition into the next part of the stage. Slow-motion walking with no action is a bit redundant. The things I mentioned above are par for the course, Typing of the Dead has a history of being very weird and not taking itself seriously at all.

 

 

It must be said that people who don’t like the “F” word, blood, body parts and jiggly physics should stay clear of this game. There is a scene where a decapitated head rolls slowly down the stairs. Throughout the levels there are a also many civilians who need to be rescued as much from themselves as from the monsters.2016-02-27_00028

Seriously, I wonder how they got there in the first place when the place is swamped with ghouls. By now you’ve probably realized that I enjoy the living heck out of this series and it’s good for learning touch typing. I wish schools had this kind of educational software.
