Haven Review: Touhou Genso Wanderer

There are some games out there that inspire greatness, that exude the promise of greatness and that are just naturally amazing. However, Touhou Genso Wanderer is not one of these games.

I love the character designs and artwork, the voice acting and the animation for the game is simply amazing. Like holy hell the animation for the cut-scenes is on par with some of the greatest games I have ever seen for anime-styled games.

However, it’s the actual gameplay that has been disappointing. You get a world of build up and then when you get to actually playing the game it is a simple dungeon explorer title with nothing special or amazing about it. No attention to detail, repetitive music and ultimately bland to look at it. It has a strong feeling like the assets were ripped from RPG maker software, titled in and coded for a Play Station 4 game.

Touhou Genso Wanderer is a title that could have been great but gave up half-way through. Although I am not sure on why, it could be budget constraints; it could be poor direction, or even simply poor design.

The controls for the game were pretty confusing as well and the screen re-size function on the Play Station 4 didn’t help much in its visuals as well. The game just simply kept overriding the default options I had placed in.  So I could never see the full status bar of my character.

I know I am being very critical about the game, but honestly that is what I am here for to be critical about games. The game sucks, put simply and people can complain and argue that with me to their blue in the face. I don’t like how they didn’t get the stage design more detail, I don’t like the repetitive music on a infinite loop, I don’t like how they mashed the controls together and barely gave any type of tutorial to go along with it.

I’d like to say it’s one of the worst games I have ever played, but there’s quite a few in the running for that.  The best part of the game is simply its branding. The beautiful and colorful characters, the animation, even the voice acting are pretty nice. It’s just everything else about the title that’s bad.

If you want in this article appears several images from the game to explain what I mean in regards to its poor level design and why I dislike it.    

If I had to say some positive things about it, I’d say that the level transition goes quickly and loads up well. But that is because they are doing a tiled asset approach and don’t have a lot of things to load.

Actual combat remains somewhat of a bore and the plot used to let you battle actual humans in the game is a simple plot convenience that lets them recycle assets to help keep the file size low for this game.

I’d say don’t buy it, but if you like sloppy work for a cheaply made game that most people could put together on the RPG maker forum with basic coding and simple assets than. By all means this game is the game for you! Although if the fan base reads this article, which they probably will at some point, my opinion probably doesn’t matter to you so enjoy the game anyways.

Haven Review: Sniper Ghost Warrior 3

Been a while since we had a review from me! So let’s jump into this, Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 is the third installment of the Ghost Warrior franchise and let’s face it, that was pretty obvious, wasn’t it?

Anyways, moving on! This is actually the first time I have played one of the Sniper games and I was always worried it wouldn’t accurately portray how snipers generally are. When you got to factor in wind resistance, timing, breathing, and all the other factors a real sniper would deal with.

But I was pleasantly surprised at how accurate it actually was. Heck, for a war style game or “action shooter” as so many people kindly put it. I was even more impressed at how many bullets it took to kill me! Not many… Which is very accurate for actual combat? This reinforced the fact that they are going for a very accurate game in terms of game-play mechanics.

My biggest issue so far though with the game-play is simply its story overall and also the fact that almost everyone in the area you are playing in has a gun, although I may exaggerate and say the mother has a gun, the husband has the gun! Little Timmy has a gun!

It’s because in the vast area’s you are in, you don’t know right away who or who isn’t your enemy you generally got to scout out with your drone to find this out. Because if you fail to scout you are pretty much going to run casually into a bunch of guys with guns who will blow your pretty little head off.

Although in terms of accuracy, I guess you could say it is painfully accurate because we never know who our enemies are in times of conflict. Happens a lot in Drone strikes, as well as various other conflicts in towns and villages which is a big thing both in the Middle East and other areas of the world.

Now, in terms of game-play I seriously cannot understand who to switch to my side arm, I only can switch between my Sniper Rifle or my Assault weapon which truth be told is kinda annoying because I really want to Solid Snake my way through compounds to take our enemies and I can’t.

Musical composition is fairly nice and it’s pretty accurate for the region you are playing in as well. Not to mention that the vehicles actually look accurate to the scenery also adding a nice level of immersion to the game that most titles generally don’t got for.

But my biggest issue with the game as a whole is the story at the beginning, where your brother is kidnapped. The whole game revolves around you looking for your brother, but at the same time you are being shot down by the person in charge. Not only is this highly improbable that the military would put two brothers together in a secret covert ops mission, but the fact that they would also let the brother openly search for his kidnapped brother knowing full well it could be a conflict of interest is my biggest issue with the game.

Outside of that, the game is wonderfully accurate, highly enjoyable, and a great time kill as well as NPC kill. I highly recommend it, if you love blowing peoples skulls wide open with a sniper rifle.

Military Update: My brother in law who served in the Armed forces wishes to state that unless you are sitting in your own shit and piss for eighteen hours a day, there is no way they can accurately portray that.

Haven Review: Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil its one of the classics of gaming, I remember picking up a copy of Resident Evil code Veronica from a pawn shop as a child and proceeding to get the crap scared out of me for a good while afterwards. Resident Evil 4 continues that tradition the same way it did then, with jump scares.

Now over time Capcom has innovated and and improved upon the series some results being good and some results being poorly received and now even though its been out for a good while Capcom has revised and refurbished Resident Evil 4 much like a lot of the series up to this point.

Now one of the first aspects of the game I noticed they improved upon that I for one am quite happy about is that you can freely save without the need to have printer ink and for the record yes, I haven’t played a Resident Evil since code Veronica.

However there is one thing I deeply loath about Resident Evil 4. I can handle the mini-bosses, the new approach to enemies, and the finishers but I cannot stand the whole escort missions. I grew up in the age of Golden Eye and and horrible escort missions and even though they improved upon the AI I still cannot stand escort missions and I go into them with a deep passionate loathing for them.

The combat seems infinity better than what it has been where you stand around swinging a knife around in mid-air. Although you do remain stationary almost all the time when firing a weapon so where it visually looks different and more fluid its still pretty bad in terms of combat. Although we can’t be too brutal with it as it is a product of its time and newer games look and feel a lot more fluid.

Music for the game remains as good as always, and as a fan of Capcom’s work over the years they remain pretty good in giving a perfect musical score to their video games from Mega Man, to Devil May Cry its always spot on to help set the tone and the fluidity of the game.

My only issues with the game besides the escort mission is the horrible character dialog it feels poorly conceived and to be fair not many decent Capcom games for that era have had very good dialog written for the characters.

The game ultimately outshines its predecessors in some good ways, but that doesn’t mean it has a flawless experience. Its nice to see Capcom bringing its older titles to the Xbox One, Play Station 4, and the PC. But I just wish instead of just increasing the resolution and updating the visuals. I would hope that they would also patch things or do a complete overhaul fixing some bugs.

The game is good though, and I’m gonna continue to play this.
