Nerd News: Captain America Takes a Stand!

SamFalconCaptainAmericaEver since comics became a thing they have always had some degree of influence from the
world we live in. Captain America is quite famous for this when he battled Richard Nixon, Hitler and various other real-world characters.

Even Superman has had his moments with the Justice League of America, fighting the evils of Hitler. However in the new recent comics of the New Captain America where Falcon has taken over his predecessor’s mantle, he has decided to take a stand on growing issues in America today.

Much as how Superman is standing up for civilians in fighting police brutality, Captain America is fighting issues on border patrol and corruption on Capital Hill. I personally think this is a good thing, but many readers are not too happy with it.Captain-America-Sam-Wilson-1-cover

This is a Captain America that takes out the bad guy, brings him in and isn’t liked by Shield. The American people are demanding that he turn in his shield already. Now some little-known facts about Sam Wilson. He is a peoples man and he is always trying to help those in need. He has been an activist, has run for congress and has also been a social worker.

This is a man who has generally been on the receiving end of government corruption and he wants to change things. However because of this and how he views things, it causes a lot of uproar, most notably from Fox who generally dislikes everything. When I say Fox, I mean Fox News; they really don’t like the new Captain America. One of their hosts even went as far as to say.

Keep politics out of comic books!

I think it’s good that companies like Marvel and DC are getting actively involved in trying to show not only America the problems it has, but also the world. You cannot fix an issue until you see that issue first-hand. They are trying their best to identify with the readers about these issues.cap

Obviously this creates a lot of controversy. But if someone is getting offended about it, it doesn’t mean they are right. I have seen police corruption and I have seen government corruption. But unless you yourself see it, you are blind to it and that is what they are trying to do. They are trying to show you so you can help change it; so you can help make a better future not only for yourself, but also for everyone in your life.

Even when Sam Wilson took up the mantle of Captain America, it was met with a lot of heated issues because his skin color is dark brown. The writer for the current run of Captain America is known as an activist standing up for the people of the world, and I see no reason why he shouldn’t. A lot of the things we do here at the Gamers-Haven is aimed at helping people identify real-world problems and help them overcome them…through gaming and things we enjoy.

You cannot fix a problem until you realize there is one.

Nerd Editorial: Beam me up! A Star Trek themed cruise is here.

enterprise_cloudsTrekkies are ecstatic for the upcoming 50th anniversary of Star Trek and now have another reason to celebrate: in 2017 the first ever Star Trek-themed cruise (well first ever officially licensed one) will sail off for almost a week of fun and excitement for fans to enjoy.

The cruise starts its voyage on January 9, 2017 and lasts for six days and six nights. It will depart from Miami, Florida and have stops in Cozumel, Mexico and the Bahamas. Cast members are joining in on the fun as well: Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi), Robert Picardo (Lewis Zimmerman), James Darren (Vic Fontaine), Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar), John de Lancie (Q), Johnathan Frakes (William Riker), and of course the host of the event William Shatner.

I’ve been on a lot of cruises before and think this could be really fun for fellow Trekkies. There’s bound to be a ton of fun activities aboard and the possibilities are endless. You could do a form of laser-tag based on the Bajoran resistance to the Cardassian occupation. All of the films could be playing outside on a big screen to be enjoyed by guests lounging around the pool. Endless trivia events where the most minute details of the shows can be fought about for prizes. A green margarita that’s named “Vulcan’s Blood.” I already want to go.

I will say the ticket prices are pretty steep ($975 as the cheapest option) but the actors need to be paid for the amount of entertaining they’ll be doing so I guess it’s fair. I also want way more DS9 actors to get in on this (if I magically had the time and money to take that kind of vacation I’d want to hang out with Avery Brooks), but it still looks really fun with the people going.

With my extensive cruising experience I can offer a few tips to people who have never been on one before but are interested in going on this: bring a lot of extra cash for when you’re on the islands. There are laundry facilities on the ships so if you don’t bring enough clothes for the trip it won’t be the end of the world. The bathrooms are small so bring travel sized shower supplies. Booze is expensive on the ships and it’s totally possible to sneak some onboard but be smart about it-your bags will be checked and you’ll be going through a metal detector so more conventional flasks are out. Bring something for sunburn because it will happen to you or someone you know at some point. Most importantly, relax and have fun. I hope everyone on board the cruise takes plenty of video so the rest of us can see what happens on it to, and the experience is ends up being the perfect way to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Haven Review: Still Life 2

SL2First up is our disclaimer. We received this game for review purposes only, and as such all opinions offered here are our own. No monies have been tendered for this review.

Still Life 2 is the sequel to…well…Still Life. In this point-and-click adventure you once again play the role of a police detective who is trying to locate and track down a mass-murderer…a masked mass-murderer! To make matters worse, you are being foiled in your efforts by an ornery news reporter, who is making fun of your failures every step of the way.

Still_Life_2_ScreenshotIt seems the news reporter herself has now been captured by the murderer, and that’s really the whole point of this game…you get to play as both women: The detective trying to apprehend the murderer, as well as the kidnapped reporter. This back-and-forth switch routine is a great mechanic, and single-handedly saves this game from the point-and-click bargain basement.

SL2Is the game worth it? In a word, Yes. Although the graphics are not tremendous, Still Life 2 follows a very complex storyline. If you like turning over clues and piecing together unfolding mysteries, then you will love this game. If careful attention to detail is tedious for you, then best to stay away. In any case, if you managed your way through the first Still Life, you should definitely continue on!
