Haven Editorial: Hello Neigbour

Hello Neighbor is showing some real progress and is all ready a quite fantastic game, if a bit unfinished, being a beta and all. That does not retract from the fun factor. From what little evidence I can gather it takes place in Russia, or at least somewhere like that. Only a lot more twisted, with jagged angles. Though that is purely an aesthetic design choice. Which works in the games favor, all to often indie games fall into the trap of attempting to make the game look real, dark and gritty. Almost all of them fail. There is only so many games with badly cobbled together 3d assets and survival elements I can take. Ranting aside. Hello Neighbor is a very fun game about hide and seek of a fashion. The person across the road has built himself a massive mansion, one that breaks several zoning laws and gravity as well.

I was rudely awoken room my slumber by an ear shattering scream from across the street. Where I could spot the broad shouldered neighbor grunting in exertion as he fell onto the floor. Eventually the sound stopped. Naturally my sense of wonder and justice got the better of mw. Which is why I have decided to sneak into his house without being caught.

Hello Neighbor is fun and at times quite adrenaline pumping. Where one of the main selling points is how the man keep adapting his defenses according to player transgression. Sneak in the front door and he will place a bear trap there next time. Place objects in the way and he will just brush them aside or jump over them. Which sometimes work and other times causes things to crash. Its a beta after all. Eventually all of those pesky bugs will be ironed out. I have faith in the developers skill to pull this of. Especially since they quite recently patched the game. Now there are several other minor complaints I do have about the game though. That is the lack of settings, such a borderless windowed and that the controls can be a bit crap. Hold down E to pick up an item, press the right mouse key to drop item, some items can be used with the left mouse button. In all honesty I would suggest having to press E once to interact. Since one of the first challenges I had after grabbing the crowbar from the trunk of my car, was to figure out how remove the planks blocking the door. Apparently I had to aim at the nails, then click in order to remove them. Luckily they did include a tutorial, which also work as the intro.

Haven Reviews: The World to the West

A fantastic adventure with four fabulous heroes, whom brings unique skills and personalities to the table. Clonington is a big hunk of muscles an unrivaled force of nature, whom strong-arm his way through boulders and beast alike.

He’s joined by the timid but brave kid whom can dig circles around his enemies while, skating across ice and lobbing dynamite at foul fiends. While the mesmerizing mercenary, dazzles her enemies with a scarf and fancy goggles, forcing them to do her bidding.

At lastly we’ve got the electric red haired teslamancer, whom can dart around the place like a bolt of lightning and much much more. Each hero is needed to complete the game and to unlock the secrets of The world to the West. Believe me it is not an easy feat, with puzzles and dangers around very twist and turn. Unlike Teslagrad, the Unity physics are less pronounced and much more solid. In turn this makes the game a lot more easy going and accessible to virtually anyone. Not to mention that the controls are fully customization, for both the gamepad and the keyboard.

Especially the monsters and colorful people inhabiting the world makes the whole experience so much more engaging. Unlike Teslagrad, which The world to the west is a sequel of, there is a lot of dialogue, that carry the story in interesting directions, with some quirky plot twists on top of it all.

The sound effects are fantastic and fits the game exceedingly well. The same can be said for the fitting music. Unless you’re struggling with that one mecha boss in the cave. That one track is rather rubbish I dare say and drove me nutters. However that is the only negative thing I can comment on, when it comes to the lovely score. Naturally the music in The World to the west can be bought separately as well, which is quite nice indeed. 

The World to the West is also littered with hidden treasure chests which require the characters unique skills to nab and grab those shiny bits. Which can be used to buy various knickknacks , from a seller in a shady pub.

Graphically the game delivers a wonderfully crafted art direction. With a lot of animations for such a stylistic game.All the Steam Achievements are linked to the secret lore scrolls within the game, making it tricky for those that likes to collect them. That being said World to the West is one of the few games that has sensible ones. After all completing a chapter is not that special in the long run. Which is way too common these days. All in all a very nicely presented package, which carries it’s inspiration on its sleeves and does something new and exiting with it. 

The price point is quite satisfactory as well, not to mention it can be bought on the Nintendo switch. I’ve not tried that port so I can’t say anything other than it makes for a lovely on the go title, with the system. Especially when sitting on a plane or a train.

Haven Review: Mysterious castle

     Mysterious Castle is an “escape the room” game, where players are given a room to hunt down different keys and components to unlock a door and exit. Essentially it’s a glorified Eye Spy game. You must click on various things in the room, such as pictures and pillows to uncover the way to open the door. Mysterious Castle isn’t even a descent one of these.

With it’s poor interface, buggy mechanics, and lousy graphics everything is just kinda lost. You can try and parse through the puzzles and click on the things you think will contain keys, but that is definitely not the most efficient way to accomplish things. Where exactly you need to click on things to access them is so finicky, You could either waste a ton of time clicking on something and it doing absolutely nothing, or clicking somewhere completely different trying to access another part of the room and end up in the place you were trying to get to earlier. It’s best to randomly click until you’ve solved the level. The sound design of the game may be even worse than the game design.

Every time you click on anything it makes this really irritating pinging noise. Given you have to click on a lot of things this becomes a constant to the game. After the first minute of playing I was forced to completely turn the sound off. Occasionally, and by that I mean rarely the game will try to do point-and-click adventure style puzzles, but these never consist of anything more than Combine hammer head with hammer stick to create hammer. It’s almost insulting to call anything this game has a puzzle.

On top of that this game reuses the same puzzles again and again. Every room, has a number lock in it. Part of solving the lock is to locate all the numbers. It gets so repetitive having to remember all the numbers scattered around the room and input them into the shitty lock, time after time. Once instead of (or possibly in addition to) numbers they use card symbols. So I thought the game was going to mix up what I had to input and make it more and more interesting. But, no such luck. They immediately drop that idea and return to the numbers.

Luckily this game is pretty short. There are only ten levels to complete. Well, only nine for me. The ninth level consists of two puzzles.

One where you flip tiles around to create a picture and the other a picture of a rainbow and a bunch of scrabble tiles. You needed to spell out a word or something that had to do with rainbows. However, Every time I tried to put something in the scrabble pieces would either get stuck in their slot and not come out. Regardless of what piece I put into a slot they’d get stuck.

Clicking on them caused them to turn a funny angle and glitch through the slot they were in. The other thing that would happen is that a slot would become unavailable. No matter what I did, I wasn’t able to put anything into a particular slot, forcing the puzzle to become unsolvable. I determined that this was a fitting end to this game and decided to quit.
