Haven Reviwes: Fortnite Early Acess

 Fortnite is a fun, fast and very addictive game, From green rabbits with guns, to grumpy muscle men cutting their way out of a city eating worm. Epic games knows how to deliver a quality experience. 3rd person action, unique abilities, looting, crafting, a plot, zombies, exploration, base building, a skill three, traps and tower defense. Topped of by the ability to play with 3 other people in glorious cooperation. If you got through all of that you’re probably a tad confused. Fortnite is one of those games that combine many great game play elements into one polished and mostly bug free package. The graphics are colorful, with a cartoon like art direction and over exaggerated features. Which makes for an exceedingly nice combination. The music is fairly a fairly okay fare, with several dynamic tunes, depending on the action. They’re there and they sound okay, but ultimately they are very forgettable. For some reason Fortnite is very found of whooping the butt of various loot pinata llamas. Which talks a lot and is brutally decapitated in a shower of candy and schematics.  The most efficient and best way to unlock new heroes and weapons that can bu build during the missions. Unfortunately this is quite much luck based. Normally I loathe zombies, as they are the most bland, rotten and boring enemy imaginable aside from annoying bats. However this game fixes that by throwing a lot of variation and special enemies that will rip you a new orifice. Plus that they gain various nasty elements later on. That being said, the game does contain a quite bit of grinding. Which will drag out the game a lot, so that is something to keep in mind. It is a time sink, a very addictive time sink. That being said many missions brings a lot of new elements and modifiers to keep things fresh. 

Combined with a randomly generated terrain. As I mentioned earlier tower defense is an important aspect of Fortnite. Most maps have an objective to defend, other wise the relentless horde will destroy it. That’s why manufactured traps and walls can be built all over the place to stop the scourge from getting through too fast. Buildings can be built anywhere as long as one have enough materials. Not to mention the storm shield, which is the main base of operation, that can be built up any way you like. An arena that has to be defended at least 10 times during the story mode. Which is another nice thing about the game, it has a fully voiced story mode with quirky characters and an over enthusiastic robot. In conclusion a good game, with many nice qualities, with quite a bit of grinding. The most negative aspect of the game thus far is that most ability powers are way too weak or short lived.

«War, war never changes» The world went nuclear ,both     technologically and figuratively. Even rusty car wrecks produce a mushroom cloud. America and china fought a war over resources, which resulted in a nuclear apocalypse. Some humans took shelter in hidden underground vaults, to shelter themselves from the nuclear rain. Some m.ore success full than others. So far all the protagonist have emerged from such a vault, Fallout 4 is no different. If you look away from the hero being cryofrozen at the start, only to be woken up 200 years later. Only to witness the protagonists spouse getting gunned down, as doctors steal the baby.

Fallout 4 is a first person shooter, within and open sandbox, with a level up mechanic. Where body parts can be targeted in slow motion, to brutal effect. But I assume you already knew that. Which means that I’ll prattle on about some new features instead. Guns no longer have durability and that is frigging sweet.

Enemies have more and better animations, the ghouls are a true pain to deal with, as they lunge for my face. There are also an abundance of high level boss monsters that at least succeeded in spilling my guts more than once.

Then there is the abundance of power armor upgrades, too bat the thing run on a limited power source, which has to be bought or looted. Apparently there exist one with a jet pack as well. Not to mention the quite fun and engaging settlement building. The best part about it is the ability to build an artillery and bomb things to heck and back. Other than that the building mechanic is a secondary thing, which I don’t spend too much time on.

Since it hardly affects the story much. But it can provide some fun bonuses.The Fallout 4 protagonist now has voiced dialogues, with a very crummy dialogue tree, which is less flexible than ever before.Each level up gave me one point, I can put in an attribute or use in one of the lovely perks.I also greatly enjoy the unique weapon modifiers and the new unique weapons, such as being able to freeze enemies.

On several occasion the game crashed on me, stability has always been an issue, a fan patch fixed some of it. When mods are activated the Steam achievements gets disabled, however that’s a small price to pay in order to get a portal gun, nude bodies and fancy effects to enhance the environment. Certain quest NPC still have the uncanny ability to engage in conversation with me, despite being hidden. It’s a really unfortunate trigger system. Though One of my biggest pet peeves must be the inability to see properly under water and a serious lack of things beneath the surface.

However it is a very nice looking game, which is very fun and extremely addictive. Where the sound track is fairly decent, with a fairly decent in-game radio. As for the plot, it’s quite fun, but it feels like it’s missing something. It’s no where near the quality of New Vegas, but it makes up for it with the rule of, stunning scenery and locations.

When I started the game I thought long and hard about which hero to chose from. All of them have something different about them. In the end it did not matter one bit. The game narrator kept feeding me stories of my greatness and insurmountable power. Naturally this story sounds way too good to be true. However that is the curse of a hero, to charge head first into a six meter tall dragon like creature. With only a dingy wooden rod to aid me. The outcome was certain from the get go, especially since I had no idea of how to play the game. Yes I died, in a fiery inferno. Normally death is the end, ironically enough I actually met him. He’s an ever so cheerful fellow. A very important and very cruel creature. Instead of staying dead, I woke up in a shallow grave, within a dying world.

Inferno Climber is a skill based combat game, with a leveling system and breakable weapons. After dying to a big bad boss, the player spawns in another location, where the game tutorial actually starts. This level is also one of the most important ones, as each time I   return to it, I can pick up weapons and potions again.

20160912135946_1Due to the nature of the game, death is a guaranty. Unfortunately this means that I have to chase down and recover my corpse, after buying a death certificate from Death. But in order to reach my body, I have to pick one of the other heroes available, which is the reason the first pick does not matter too much. However at some point I will probably run out of fresh corpses to throw at the meat grinder. The world of Inferno Climber is also covered in puzzles and devious traps. Which is one of the fun factors. Inch by inch, the world opens up and more secrets are found. 20160912143918_1

Luckily some of the most obnoxious areas game me a breather when I failed too much. There is a section of stealth, where overly aggressive skeletons patrols. I died a lot there and eventually a giant chicken spawned. The bird gave me a deodorant, which made me harder to see until I broke stealth. Enemies have no mercy and have no quarrels about kicking people on the ground. Which make recovery from a hard blow very hard, frustrating and unforgiving indeed. Some selected few enemies also have quick time events in order to escape them. Luckily the camera cooperates most of the time and lock-on actually works. There is also a fair deal of towering bosses, that will wipe the floor with anyone unprepared. I learned this the hard way. As my foes fall before me in Inferno Climber, experience points and money is doped as well. Each level up provides stat points to use. In the stat menu there is the usual selection of stats, which are quite self explanatory. The other way to improve stats is through loot, however even the strongest of armors will eventually break. Which is why there is a crafting system in place. Which proves a way make supplies.

Graphically the game is very basic and a bit rough around the edges. Where everything serves a purpose. It a bit on the brown and the dark side at times though. Weirdly enough there are a lot of loading screens, despite the stylistic nature of it all. Music is solid and very instrumental, with some jaunty tunes and adds a lot to the atmosphere. The in-game sound effects of Inferno Climber are decent, if not for the critical existence failure alert. Having a repetitive beeping when almost dead is just bad design.
To top it all of the writing is decent and the game can be set to Japanese as well.

To sum it up, fun, frustrating and flawed. Highly recommended for people whom like a challenge, exploration and skill based combat. The kind that is after more that state of the art graphics. The Steam Achievements helps as well. On a final note,  do not expect to complete Inferno Climber in one sitting.
