Haven Reviews Evil Genome

A fiery red head is shot down over a dirtball of a planet, then proceed to wake up with no memory and a questionable ai companion. Despite the amnesia she still kicks ass and takes names, while uncovering a contrived plot with some odd twists and turns.

A smooth skill based combat system, where the character only attack, or dodge when given input. The transition from kicking, to shooting dodging is smooth and very responsive. As enemies and bosses dies, loot and experience points is gained. Which unlocks various fancy skills and passive effects, when the gained points is spent within the skill tree. The world itself is littered with pickups hidden here and there, some that can only be reached with specific abilities and upgrades. Lot items can be sold, gives stats and other benefits as well. Yes Evil Genome takes a lot of inspiration from other side scrolling platform games and it works. 

Evil Genome looks very nice, especially the character models and it’s very easy to see that they put a lot of effort into them. Which is a stark contrast to the brown, bleak dust bowel of a planet the game take place on. Small texts of lore and exposition can be found as well. A bunch of minuscule side quests and a truck load of talkative npc.

Aside from an relentless onslaught of enemies and horrible nasty monsters, there is always a decent challenge to be had, because evil genome is not shy about throwing big burly bosses in your face.

Unfortunately the voice acting is a bit stiff and definitely very wooden. It’s not to shabby for a localization, just a bit flawed and flat to say the least. The subtitles does have some annoying comma and white space errors, but that’s rather minor complaint. Other than that, there is moire loading than I would like for a game of this nature.

Personally I feel that the game is a bit heavy handed on giving the player achievements. Even if there are several in game rewards. Seriously I got an achievement for watching the intro and one for opening a chest.  Other than that the a Chinese dialogue, with English subs would be a welcoming addition. All in all a solid game, with rough edges soon to be patched out. But it’s not a game I can recommend for most casual players or for people who are very picky about questionable Asian dubbing.

Haven Reviews: Herald

 All good stories have a start and Herald starts with a splash, as the main character is drowning, while drooling on as he starts narrate. He eventually wake up in an exotic palace place of sorts, with lush pillows and a wise woman whom want some information. And thus begins the story of the poor waterlogged sod, as he recalls his epic voyage across the seven seas.

Herald is a fairly competent put together adventure game. With a pleasant to look at, complimented by a very colorful art direction and a handful of colorful characters. Which fills Herald with life and charm. The point and click part is a great departure from the way most story heavy games deals with events. After all it will get a bit boring to listen to the people going on and on. That being said, there is a lot of voice acted dialogue and much text to be expected.

For some very questionable reason our illustrious leader, decided to hand me this review copy. Despite my issues with how slow the story progress. Which is very ironic coming from someone who has played through Final fantasy 8 several times and most of the Metal Gear Solid games. Then again this is a purely subjective point of view.

The voice actors does a fairly decent job and competent job, when bringing the emotional range of the characters to life. At least for the most part at time they do talk way too slowly, despite the situation at hand. Even if it brings a certain charm to it all, the dialogue is incredible slow and tedious for the most part.

Herald also sports some lovely drawn cut scenes helps to bring it all to life. Though a combination of fully animated 3d models and several hand drawn scenes. Though dialogue can be a bit awkward, as the one whom is currently talking is shown on the right side of the screen. Much like a muppet, with dramatic eye movement and some facial expressions here and there. However there are not much in the way of mouth animation when anyone talk. It is also very refreshing to see such a varied cast, showing of the fantastic variety of people the world has to offer.

Some animations are a bit hit or miss, sometimes those pesky buggers stand around looking weird and unfocused, while other times people in Herald look like they actually have a purpose. Such as the poor fellow puking at the side of the ship. Or that one crew member swabbing the floor.

A historical inspired dram, with many choices that may or may not have an effect on the story. In between the story events, there are a lot of interactivity, through pointing and clicking. Where objects can be looked at, along with an encyclopedia to find info about almost everything. Some blood and sprinkled with violence is to be expected. But due to the nature of the game, it’s not something that should scar or scare anyone.

Highly recommended for people whom like an intriguing mystery and visual novel storytelling, that’s more than just flashy images and walls of text.

Haven Reviews: Streets of Rogue

 

After the new major enacted some new and crazy laws, several disgruntled people in Streets of Rogue decided to form a rebel alliance. Which the player character joined, in order to bring down the oppressor.

Streets of Rogue is a game where each level have a theme and is randomly assembled, with a series of objectives. Which has to be completed in order to exit the floor to get to the next stage. Every now and then the game will also throw in special hazards, such as a killer robot.

Despite the pixelated graphics and simple character models, everything has a lot of charm in Street of Rogue, it’s also violent and sadistic as all hell. With several radically different characters to unlock and several ways to complete each objective. A stealthy approach is just as legit and feasible, as going in guns blazing. Or as I like to do, have random hoodlums trigger and run after me, and accidentally hitting the wrong target in the crossfire. It’s a glorious carnage to behold. The most insane so far is the pesky time bombs, which will bring down the entire floor when the time runs out. Virtually anything in the game can and will be destroyed, wrecked and thrashed.

Naturally there is an RPG element to the game and currency that can buy new options back at the rebel headquarters.

Since each unlockable character has a different approach, I just have to mention how awesome it is to play as a naked, alien baby body snatcher. Whom can take over the body of anyone, as long as their back is unexposed. Or the doctor who cant use a gum, but will gladly use chloroform to knock out anyone. A true pacifist indeed.

Streets of Rogue is very clearly centered around coop gameplay, since you will die a lot and I know for certain that I did indeed die several times. Other players in the game can revive the fallen one at the cost of half the health bar. Not to mention being a distraction, to leave that unprotected back exposed. Despite being in the very early stages with a lot of content yet to be added, it works like a charm and does everything it sets out to do. Not to mention it has gamepad support and is addictive as all hell. I will gladly recommend this game to anyone whom like rogue lite games, a ton of options and a bloody chaotic mess. With a kick ass soundtrack, which can be bought separately.
