Haven Reviews: Herald

 All good stories have a start and Herald starts with a splash, as the main character is drowning, while drooling on as he starts narrate. He eventually wake up in an exotic palace place of sorts, with lush pillows and a wise woman whom want some information. And thus begins the story of the poor waterlogged sod, as he recalls his epic voyage across the seven seas.

Herald is a fairly competent put together adventure game. With a pleasant to look at, complimented by a very colorful art direction and a handful of colorful characters. Which fills Herald with life and charm. The point and click part is a great departure from the way most story heavy games deals with events. After all it will get a bit boring to listen to the people going on and on. That being said, there is a lot of voice acted dialogue and much text to be expected.

For some very questionable reason our illustrious leader, decided to hand me this review copy. Despite my issues with how slow the story progress. Which is very ironic coming from someone who has played through Final fantasy 8 several times and most of the Metal Gear Solid games. Then again this is a purely subjective point of view.

The voice actors does a fairly decent job and competent job, when bringing the emotional range of the characters to life. At least for the most part at time they do talk way too slowly, despite the situation at hand. Even if it brings a certain charm to it all, the dialogue is incredible slow and tedious for the most part.

Herald also sports some lovely drawn cut scenes helps to bring it all to life. Though a combination of fully animated 3d models and several hand drawn scenes. Though dialogue can be a bit awkward, as the one whom is currently talking is shown on the right side of the screen. Much like a muppet, with dramatic eye movement and some facial expressions here and there. However there are not much in the way of mouth animation when anyone talk. It is also very refreshing to see such a varied cast, showing of the fantastic variety of people the world has to offer.

Some animations are a bit hit or miss, sometimes those pesky buggers stand around looking weird and unfocused, while other times people in Herald look like they actually have a purpose. Such as the poor fellow puking at the side of the ship. Or that one crew member swabbing the floor.

A historical inspired dram, with many choices that may or may not have an effect on the story. In between the story events, there are a lot of interactivity, through pointing and clicking. Where objects can be looked at, along with an encyclopedia to find info about almost everything. Some blood and sprinkled with violence is to be expected. But due to the nature of the game, it’s not something that should scar or scare anyone.

Highly recommended for people whom like an intriguing mystery and visual novel storytelling, that’s more than just flashy images and walls of text.

Haven Review: Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil its one of the classics of gaming, I remember picking up a copy of Resident Evil code Veronica from a pawn shop as a child and proceeding to get the crap scared out of me for a good while afterwards. Resident Evil 4 continues that tradition the same way it did then, with jump scares.

Now over time Capcom has innovated and and improved upon the series some results being good and some results being poorly received and now even though its been out for a good while Capcom has revised and refurbished Resident Evil 4 much like a lot of the series up to this point.

Now one of the first aspects of the game I noticed they improved upon that I for one am quite happy about is that you can freely save without the need to have printer ink and for the record yes, I haven’t played a Resident Evil since code Veronica.

However there is one thing I deeply loath about Resident Evil 4. I can handle the mini-bosses, the new approach to enemies, and the finishers but I cannot stand the whole escort missions. I grew up in the age of Golden Eye and and horrible escort missions and even though they improved upon the AI I still cannot stand escort missions and I go into them with a deep passionate loathing for them.

The combat seems infinity better than what it has been where you stand around swinging a knife around in mid-air. Although you do remain stationary almost all the time when firing a weapon so where it visually looks different and more fluid its still pretty bad in terms of combat. Although we can’t be too brutal with it as it is a product of its time and newer games look and feel a lot more fluid.

Music for the game remains as good as always, and as a fan of Capcom’s work over the years they remain pretty good in giving a perfect musical score to their video games from Mega Man, to Devil May Cry its always spot on to help set the tone and the fluidity of the game.

My only issues with the game besides the escort mission is the horrible character dialog it feels poorly conceived and to be fair not many decent Capcom games for that era have had very good dialog written for the characters.

The game ultimately outshines its predecessors in some good ways, but that doesn’t mean it has a flawless experience. Its nice to see Capcom bringing its older titles to the Xbox One, Play Station 4, and the PC. But I just wish instead of just increasing the resolution and updating the visuals. I would hope that they would also patch things or do a complete overhaul fixing some bugs.

The game is good though, and I’m gonna continue to play this.

Haven Review: Technomancer

Now the Technomancer is one of those few games that manages to catch my interest on and from there its hard to grasp how I feel about it as I play through the game.

At the start of the game you get to create your character. How you look the color of your eyes, skin tone, the works and you actually do get to see your character quite a lot on camera to help give it some extra depth.

From there you are given a optional tutorial to learn all the combat controls and combat stances to which there are four different types.
There is the Technomancer build where you control lightning, the Warrior build where you fight with a giant Bow-staff like Robin from Batman. The Guardian which is my personal favorite which is a shield and a mace to beat things with and last the Rogue where you fight with a gun and a knife because swords aren’t a thing.

At first I thought I could use just the single battle stance to get by and for the most part you can but certain area’s really push other stances onto you making the battles much harder.

Next comes a skill tree where you can put points into it and improve which stances you like from Technomancer, Warrior, Guardian and Rogue. The skill tree’s help you unlock new potential strengths to your stances and help you improve during combat.

Speaking of Skill tree’s there are is another used for skill sets from Charisma to Stealing much like something you would experience in a older RPG its good and it helps you loot things and make a lot of money early game if played right. But Ultimately picking which one you want can be a tedious task, I put mine into stealth originally and I wish I put it into charisma afterwards.

Combat in the actual game is really irritating as at the start you got low health and its hard to put more points into your personal chart as you level up because those skill points are given out very rarely once every 5 levels so getting more health is very hard and the game punishes you quite severely for being a low level.

Another issue I found with the game is that the story moves a long at a slow pace to the point where it is very hard to keep on task. I spent the first thirteen hours at the start of the game doing only starting missions and at one point I would have sworn that was the only area for the game. Its a good story though, its just very slow paced due to the combat and the sheer size of the area’s.

Music wise I’ll keep it simple, it sounds very Gothic mixed with electronic vibe and although strange its very fitting for the game as you are based on mars and it feels all ancient with the technology around it.

Now for my biggest issue with the game and possibly the most irritating things I personally have thought of with it. You are on Mars but if you go outside you are mutated by the suns rays and then die due to the radiation from it. Naturally this would be a thing but the fact of the matter is everyone on the planet is breathing air which means there is a Eco-system of sorts in place and they even talk about farms where things grow and mutate so there has to be some degree of a o-zone layer to protect everyone from the suns rays but there isn’t and that so far is the biggest plot hole so far.

The next is Technomancers and mutants in the game are mutations and although its kept secret there are countless scientists alive on that planet who quite literally study genetic mutations and not to mention if this is based in a future of humanity. We already have genetic scientists who can alter a persons DNA now on a whim so the fact that Technomancers haven’t been found out because of their mutations is utterly stupid and another giant plot hole.

The third and final issue I have is water, NASA speculates that Mars has water stored in its crust. Which for the most part I believe is true and that the planet itself does indeed have some water still in it perhaps further down and some in its atmosphere still. But the game makes you believe that there is almost none and its so rare that people want to kill over it. However they got a bar in the town where they sell guess what, beer and any idiot knows that beer has water in it and is readily available to the workers there.

There are just way to many plot holes for my taste, I get it that the game is trying to bring me into its fantasy world of technology, evil corporations as a governing agent but with so many plot holes I can’t experience that immersion that I want. The game is good albeit if you tend to ignore all these issues with plot holes but if you are like me it will annoy you to know end.
