Haven Reviwes: Fortnite Early Acess

Fortnite is a fun, fast and very addictive game, From green rabbits with guns, to grumpy muscle men cutting their way out of a city eating worm. Epic games knows how to deliver a quality experience. 3rd person action, unique abilities, looting, crafting, a plot, zombies, exploration, base building, a skill three, traps and tower defense. Topped of by the ability to play with 3 other people in glorious cooperation. If you got through all of that you’re probably a tad confused. Fortnite is one of those games that combine many great game play elements into one polished and mostly bug free package. The graphics are colorful, with a cartoon like art direction and over exaggerated features. Which makes for an exceedingly nice combination. The music is fairly a fairly okay fare, with several dynamic tunes, depending on the action. They’re there and they sound okay, but ultimately they are very forgettable. For some reason Fortnite is very found of whooping the butt of various loot pinata llamas. Which talks a lot and is brutally decapitated in a shower of candy and schematics.  The most efficient and best way to unlock new heroes and weapons that can bu build during the missions. Unfortunately this is quite much luck based. Normally I loathe zombies, as they are the most bland, rotten and boring enemy imaginable aside from annoying bats. However this game fixes that by throwing a lot of variation and special enemies that will rip you a new orifice. Plus that they gain various nasty elements later on. That being said, the game does contain a quite bit of grinding. Which will drag out the game a lot, so that is something to keep in mind. It is a time sink, a very addictive time sink. That being said many missions brings a lot of new elements and modifiers to keep things fresh.

Combined with a randomly generated terrain. As I mentioned earlier tower defense is an important aspect of Fortnite. Most maps have an objective to defend, other wise the relentless horde will destroy it. That’s why manufactured traps and walls can be built all over the place to stop the scourge from getting through too fast. Buildings can be built anywhere as long as one have enough materials. Not to mention the storm shield, which is the main base of operation, that can be built up any way you like. An arena that has to be defended at least 10 times during the story mode. Which is another nice thing about the game, it has a fully voiced story mode with quirky characters and an over enthusiastic robot. In conclusion a good game, with many nice qualities, with quite a bit of grinding. The most negative aspect of the game thus far is that most ability powers are way too weak or short lived.

Haven Editorial: Conan Exiles

Haven Editorial: Adventures is Exile

Conan exiles takes place in the magical world of Conan the barbarian. Which the Norwegian game company Funcom made another game in. Unlike Age of Conan, this is an open sandbox, with crafting, survival elements and full frontal nudity. Both genders can chose to be completely naked within the game settings. The same options can be set by the server host as well.

I started my adventure on a sour note, being accused of crimes I never committed. Some quite unsavory people knocked me out cold and left me dry and hanging. I mean honestly, who the devil crucify someone alive in the middle of a god forsaken wilderness? honorless dogs that is who. After a mighty struggle I managed to pry myself off the cross and found a note next to me, along with a waterskin. Something I consider a quite fitting contribution to my glorious conquest of these savage lands. All around me is a barren wasteland of a desert, sparsely populated with black ruins and a cobble stone road to traverse. Further down the path I ran into a flying fiend of sorts, that snarled at me before it flew into the distance. Eventually I found an oasis, with lush vegetation and a whole lot of water all over the place. As I was admiring the lovely scenery several vicious scaly beast ganged up on me and I died brutally. Eventually I re-spawned at the cross again. Death is apparently a slap on the wrist as long as I can reclaim my corpse and the loot I carry.

Long story short, Conan Exiles is an open sandbox survival game on Steam, that launched as an early access title. Which leaves rooms for a lot of patching. Despite some minor bugs and annoyances, the game is fairly addictive and a decent proof of concept. However there are some very nasty bugs and horrible loading time around the time this article is being written. Make no mistake, Conan Exiles is fun, especially with friends and comes with both PVP and PVE modes. Where people can host their own servers and modify the game mechanics. Such as day and night cycles and the experience gain. It’s also totally possible to play it solo and access the admin panel, which can create any object of desire within the game. AT one point I decided to summon an avatar of Yog. A 50 meter tall tentacled monstrosity, with the ability to penetrate the earth. Unfortunately it only last for a minute.

Crafting is fairly fast and straight forward. Gather the needed resource, go into the menu and click on the desired recipe. Each level unlock several new recipes. However they are best to divide between several players to maximize the effectiveness. One should focus on building fancy things, while the other player should work on making weapons. Eventually I learned how to make a lesser wheel of pain, rope and a blackjack. Three lovely items that allows me to knock someone out, string them up and drag them back to base. Nothing is more satisfying than to employ several highly trained athletic slaves. Knocking someone unconscious can lead to some rather gruesome mutilations. The game is bloody, brutal and uncompromising. Limbs will fly and blood will soak the sand. The sandbox of Conan Exiles is composed of 90% sand, which is quite an oxymoron indeed.

The wilderness is populated by various camps, vicious monsters and swarms of hyenas and toxic spiders. I can’s count the number of times I ran out of stamina, got crippled and was brutally murdered by fanged fiends. All in all a very fun, if a bit flawed game, which can only get better with time. Since long loading and optimization leaves a lot to be desired,

Haven Editorial: Pixel Princess

The life of an adventurer is filled with perils. Such as man eating treasure chests. Gods angry at the stupid things men do. The constant lure of a kings ransom worth of treasures and big angry hairy and hungry monsters.
“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
J.R.R Tolkien

First impressions are important and Lanze Games deliver a quite fantastic kickstarter, highlighting their quite interesting game indeed.

I’m a sucker for rogue games, despite the concept being built upon luck and dying way too much. The concept is simple and easy to grasp. The world have set places and locations, while the rest is randomly generated within the world. A fully narrative experience is also promised by Pixel Princess and that is sweet. Most such games have virtually no story what so ever, aside from some random journals and the setting itself. Then again half the fun is the story that unfolds dynamically as you play.

Music is also key to any good game and I’m quite sure they have a skilled music maker on their team. The soundtrack can be bought and there is even a retro inspired version too boot. I just hope they have flack. It has everything to do with the quality. I just have a different taste. Never the less, from what I can see within the trailer and the information provided by the developer. The framework is already there and looks fun. Great many indie developers these days have a bad habit of underselling their product or doing a bad half baked effort at making a good game. If anything consider Pixel princess a lesson in how to show, tell and sell.

The art direction is positively lovely and full of charm. It’s done in that cutesy chibi style and kept consistent. If their concept art is anything to go by, they know exactly what they are doing by embracing pixels and nice animations. I also adore their silly promotion comics.

The game is already Greenlit, however it needs a little bit more support in order to deliver the best possible experience. Such as coop. Something I value greatly in any game I run across. There is also a slew of rewards for those whom are willing to back Pixel Princess.
