Haven Review: Technomancer

Now the Technomancer is one of those few games that manages to catch my interest on and from there its hard to grasp how I feel about it as I play through the game.

At the start of the game you get to create your character. How you look the color of your eyes, skin tone, the works and you actually do get to see your character quite a lot on camera to help give it some extra depth.

From there you are given a optional tutorial to learn all the combat controls and combat stances to which there are four different types.
There is the Technomancer build where you control lightning, the Warrior build where you fight with a giant Bow-staff like Robin from Batman. The Guardian which is my personal favorite which is a shield and a mace to beat things with and last the Rogue where you fight with a gun and a knife because swords aren’t a thing.

At first I thought I could use just the single battle stance to get by and for the most part you can but certain area’s really push other stances onto you making the battles much harder.

Next comes a skill tree where you can put points into it and improve which stances you like from Technomancer, Warrior, Guardian and Rogue. The skill tree’s help you unlock new potential strengths to your stances and help you improve during combat.

Speaking of Skill tree’s there are is another used for skill sets from Charisma to Stealing much like something you would experience in a older RPG its good and it helps you loot things and make a lot of money early game if played right. But Ultimately picking which one you want can be a tedious task, I put mine into stealth originally and I wish I put it into charisma afterwards.

Combat in the actual game is really irritating as at the start you got low health and its hard to put more points into your personal chart as you level up because those skill points are given out very rarely once every 5 levels so getting more health is very hard and the game punishes you quite severely for being a low level.

Another issue I found with the game is that the story moves a long at a slow pace to the point where it is very hard to keep on task. I spent the first thirteen hours at the start of the game doing only starting missions and at one point I would have sworn that was the only area for the game. Its a good story though, its just very slow paced due to the combat and the sheer size of the area’s.

Music wise I’ll keep it simple, it sounds very Gothic mixed with electronic vibe and although strange its very fitting for the game as you are based on mars and it feels all ancient with the technology around it.

Now for my biggest issue with the game and possibly the most irritating things I personally have thought of with it. You are on Mars but if you go outside you are mutated by the suns rays and then die due to the radiation from it. Naturally this would be a thing but the fact of the matter is everyone on the planet is breathing air which means there is a Eco-system of sorts in place and they even talk about farms where things grow and mutate so there has to be some degree of a o-zone layer to protect everyone from the suns rays but there isn’t and that so far is the biggest plot hole so far.

The next is Technomancers and mutants in the game are mutations and although its kept secret there are countless scientists alive on that planet who quite literally study genetic mutations and not to mention if this is based in a future of humanity. We already have genetic scientists who can alter a persons DNA now on a whim so the fact that Technomancers haven’t been found out because of their mutations is utterly stupid and another giant plot hole.

The third and final issue I have is water, NASA speculates that Mars has water stored in its crust. Which for the most part I believe is true and that the planet itself does indeed have some water still in it perhaps further down and some in its atmosphere still. But the game makes you believe that there is almost none and its so rare that people want to kill over it. However they got a bar in the town where they sell guess what, beer and any idiot knows that beer has water in it and is readily available to the workers there.

There are just way to many plot holes for my taste, I get it that the game is trying to bring me into its fantasy world of technology, evil corporations as a governing agent but with so many plot holes I can’t experience that immersion that I want. The game is good albeit if you tend to ignore all these issues with plot holes but if you are like me it will annoy you to know end.

Haven Review: Hatsune Miku Project Diva X

Vocaloids its taken the world by storm with their nice synthesized voices and their little skirts but lets be serious does it stand up well in a game and that is what we aim to find out in Hatsune Miku Project Diva X.     project_diva_x_logo Now getting right into it the game is a Rhythm game and as such it has a standard rule of thumb which is to simply hit the right notes at the right time to win points at the end of the game. It has a score multiplayer to increase your score but that really isn’t needed and its just to make the game seem like it has more depth to it.

project-diva-x-gameplayEach stage is done with the music we have grown to love from various YouTube artists online and the canon that the fanbase has helped create. Don’t get me wrong in this regard, I love how Sega handles many of their fan related things from Sonic the Hedgehog, and the first class shade they throw at Nintendo deserves awards.

But this variety of game has been recycled over and over from the 3Ds title we reviewed to this game. The same mechanics over and again to the point where they aren’t really inspiring.

Now I know what you are probably thinking, why am I attacking the franchise like this? We’ll its true, that is all a Rhythm game is and truth be told you can find other franchises like it also such as Dance Dance Revolution from Konami, or anything fan made on NewsGrounds that is completely free to play.hatsune-miku-diva-x-feature

I am not saying that Rhythm games are bad, I am saying they need to work on their material that being said lets continue on with the review shall we?

The music for the game as expected is songs that have been a part of the fan base for the longest time and they are enjoyable, there are a few tracks that Sega themselves put in mainly for menu’s but in the end the games music is pretty decent. Not saying its bad, its decent much like how if its not broken don’t fix it basically.

There is some fun aspects for the game where you can complete stages and win items to dress up your Vocaloids with items like Dog ears, fancy outfits and skirts and such. So if you are a fan of dressing up digital women in fancy outfits you can do that too! I even have a personal favorite for the Vocaloids and my personal choice is Luka and her long pink hair so its nice to dress her up, it makes my inner nerd scream with joy.hatsunemikux-jpg

The controls for the game are also spot on and truth be told its the most accurate part of the game as it is the requirement to even play a Rhythm game. Without decent controls the game wouldn’t even be playable.

But I think the biggest issue with the game is that they try to give it a deep in depth story and it just makes the entire game fall apart as a whole. I get it the worlds you go to need music and their falling dim and you need to sing to bring the worlds back to life and also use this special item to make singing easier and fill it up so you can go to the other worlds.obyii4xutlzi2dxslelo

There I summarized the story for you, each world is comprised into a musical category from Jazz, to classical and so forth and you got to play the various stages of each world to bring them back to life.

In conclusion though the game is fun in its own regard, but it feels like Sega keeps pumping these out for a cash grab to try and lure in the love struck fan base for a quick profit. I would hope that a company that can provide first class shade can back up their strong talk with more solid gameplay but the title left me a bit listless in terms  of its quality.hatsunemikuopeningmovie5

If you are a fan of classic Rhythm games and the repetitive gameplay it provides than this is the title for you. If you want something more creative and innovative you best look elseware.

Haven Review: Touhou Genso Rondo Bullet Ballet

tgr-logo     ss04_1

Touhou Genso Rondo Bullet Ballet or to be put more elegantly a bullet hell title with lots of strange women. Now I should say I know nothing of the anime or manga this is based off of. I am judging this solely on its game mechanics and characteristics of the genre so if you’re a fan of this franchise well, prepare to probably be offended.gr-se

Upon loading the game I am met with a check file screen almost every time and it loves to indulge me in this aspect for a good two to three minutes of so before I am able to play the game. But once the game does load I am able to start picking from the story mode, online mode and the various other gameplay modes the game has and I got to say.

Having a bullet hell game where I can battle against other players online seems actually like a lot of fun. The fact that if two top tier players got together and went at it we would probably see them dancing around each other for a good while and I find that really interesting.bullet

Now the visuals of the game are quite breath-taking a few of the girls minus their anime like appearance reminds me of girls I knew back in Florida where I grew up. I really do love all of their designs although some make me wonder about the creators mental health.

The audio for the game is fairly nice as well and really enjoyable, its both relaxing and fairly up beat through most of the stages you play through. But I must say when I see a story in a game without a linear style of playing it never feels right to me and it doesn’t really fit for the area of gameplay.feat-ss02_lg_thumb

Its much like taking a game like Just Cause 3 and saying the entire story is based around playing Pong. Even in games like Street fighter you have a linear story to go along with it such as a Worlds Material Arts Tournament and that explains the plot, and the combat style but in Touhou Genso Rondo Bullet Ballet you don’t get that at all.

The gameplay however is good, and it is enjoyable. Not to mention its fairly straight forward to learn and adapt to that style of playing so its great for beginners but as for everything else in the game It felt lacking.

ss03_1The characters didn’t really stand out to me, if I went into this knowing more of where they are based from maybe I would find it a bit more interesting. But as to someone who just picked up the title and started playing I don’t have that sense of attraction that they are hoping to get from people so they will buy that game.

If it had a way to appeal to more players outside of the fanbase maybe I would be more keen to study them. But I am not, so I simply the if you removed all the anime and manga ties to this game you would have a decently made game. But trying to tie in a story and making it oblivious to newcomers hurts the game more.t1

The game doesn’t shine like I wish it would, as a game though its good, as for its characters, and story I can’t give it any points.
