Haven Review: Spider-Man Homecoming!

Spider-Man – Homecoming, for me it is the best Spider-Man movie to date, don’t misunderstand me though I did enjoy the Amazing Spider-Man with the actor Andrew Garfield leading the main role of Peter Parker and Tobey Maguire did a great job in the original Spider-Man movies that Sony produced but the most recent Spider-Man that is tied into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) I think is by far the most accurate portrayal of Peter Parker / Spider-Man. But before we get started as to why, for obvious reasons this is massive spoiler territory so steer clear if you don’t want to hear what I got to say.

The Movie starts with Peter Parker going to Germany to confront Captain America as Spider-Man and does a little self movie journey of his adventure on the way and even during the confrontation with Happy Hogan giving Spider-Man the third degree during the entire thing. This ultimately concludes with Peter being able to keep the new suit Tony Stark has created for him and which makes him really happy about having.

Vulture from Columbia Pictures’ SPIDER-MAN™: HOMECOMING.

Flashback, Adrian Toomes is doing the clean up from the Avengers during the incident in New York where Loki was running amuck and he is tasked with clean up of all Alien artifacts. Soon however, the government steps in and hire Damage Control to take over with handling all the clean up and this naturally upsets Toomes and they decide to keep some of the materials they were suppose to turn in.

Thus, the Super Villain’s are born. They then spend the next eight years stealing stuff from damage control in secret and building a arsenal of super powerful deadly weapons, and when I say super Villains I mean Vulture, Shocker, and even early references to The Scorpion and even the future Prowler makes it into the cameo’s scattered about the movie.

Flash forward again and its after Civil War, Peter Parker as Spider-Man is patrolling New York fighting crime, saving old ladies, stopping bike thefts, and eating churro’s that said old lady purchased for him.
He is anxiously awaiting the next big mission so he can join Tony Stark and fight worldwide disasters as a Avenger and Happy and Tony keep brushing him off, so when he is confronted for a chance to fight a Super Villain over the course of the movie, that being Adrian Toomes as the Vulture (played by Micheal Keaton) and his underlings that make appearances throughout the movie such as The Shocker, Scorpion and others.

However it is due to Peters constant inference that his friends are put in to mortal danger and ultimately leads to Tony Stark taking the suit back from Peter stating that “If you are nothing without the suit, than you don’t deserve it.”

Which forces Peter to rethink who he is as not only a person, but as a super hero also when we wish for those immortal words to be echoed. “With great power, comes great responsibility.” But due to reasons for mortal men to ponder we never get that. Instead we get a reflection of Peter looking back at himself when he chooses to fight for what’s right regardless of the threats made to him, his family, and his friends and take a stand even without the suit Tony Stark made him.

As we read the finale of the movie Tony Stark tries to steal the thunder by inviting him to become a full time Avenger and has even produced a new suit for the occasion. But Peter, knowing himself a bit better than he did at the start of the movie when he was so anxious to prove to himself and others that he can be a great Super Hero.  He decides to stick closer to the ground as a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man instead of a Spider-Man fighting for the world and looking for trouble.

The movie in my option is solid, with an excellent cast of characters, with subtle supporting roles done by Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Peter Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and Happy Hogan not to mention all the cast for his friends, and I am happy to say that with Marvel leading the helm of creative direction for our favorite web-head that we are getting a Peter Parker true to character finally.

I really enjoyed the movie, as did the people I saw it with and not just because I saw it in a Zentai Spider-Man suit and talked about how I remember this scene so well as if I was actually a part of it, although they did get a good chuckle out of it.The best part is the after credits scene, which is best not spoken about and better off being seen.

So go see the movie when you can!

Haven Editorial: Desucon 2017

Haven Editorial: Desucon 2017

Desucon is the biggest and longest running cosplay convention in Norway. It’s been around for at least a decade by this point. Which is fantastic achievement on its own and does the cosplay community a great service. However size has it’s own price. However it is not my place to speculate about the chaotic nightmare of logistics and people management.

I came to Desucon to take pictures of interesting people and compete in the cosplay competition. Which I have a minor beef with. Which for once has nothing to with with the judges decisions on who would go on to the finals. Yet I’m quite sure some people do, however I did not inquire about that. It just well known fact that people will complain a lot about such things. That being said, there is a lot of fun to be had by signing on as a volunteer. The back bone of any convention.

As usual Desucon takes place in Lillestrøm during the summer. It’s a very flat region of east Norway with a big building perfectly suited to hold any convention, with easy commuting from all over. Be it by plane, bus or train. There is also a plethora of stores and high quality restaurants and an expensive hotel next door. Several noticeable and very geeky stores bring a lot of fantastic merchandise as well. A great number of artists shows up as well and most of them takes a lot of custom commissions. Replica swords, bead creatures, leather products, body pillows, figurines, cups, candy and much much more.

I’ve yet to mention the various organizations having stands there as well. Such as the highly questionable Galtvort skolen LARP. It’s a translation on the hog and wart pun, which is the recipe for having serious legal issues. Due to film companies being a dick about reinforcing copyrights.

The ever noisy and quite healthy Kendo participants. EF education, which enthralls you with the ability to study languages abroad. And many, many more.

My costume idea for this year was a scantly clad Blackwatch Ryes from Overwatch. I figured out that parading around in his skimpy armor would be a lot more comfy than wearing a shirt. Plus I could not arsed to get an olive green hoodie. Not yet at least. The process can be found on my twitch page under the name Zaceron on pretty much anything.

Part one was held in a closed room with some cameras, several people from the crew. Apparently it was an auditorium with many rows of chairs, filled with an overwhelming amount of participants in colorful costume. Essentially the idea was for each participant to wait their turn and talk to the three lovely female judges in front. Personally I was just lucky to get there in time, since they decided to held it one hour earlier. Without notifying me, since I just arrived by bus when the announcement was made through the speaker system. Due to the ease of dressing up I did get in on time. Winning is a hard sell and there is always more to tell. However there is one big beef I have and that is the number of people going on to the finale, it went from twenty something down to five. The real problem I had about this is quite simple. Most of the participants had a sketch in mid, with music, sound and acting planned out. Now they will never be seen, which is sad and a waste of entertainment potential. Which also undercut a lot of fun. Seeing people do their hardest to perform on stage in a custom costume is a fantastic experience and fun to boot. Also a lot of the participants could greatly benefit from the self esteem boost.

However there was a drop in competition on Saturday, which had a lot of high quality participants as well and a much more chill, show your work atmosphere. I never expected to see a Daedric warrior cosplay. Then again a Oni Genji was there as well, with a mimic hiding in a corner, promising free loot. Aside from the big competition, there are a lot of other wholesome activities going on as well. Such as the LAN section, for people who have the balls to drag their expensive PC across the land. Various fandom meet ups, board games and much, much more. There is just too much to mention. After all I came there to compete, meet fantastic people, take a bucket load of images and fishing for ideas. Which is exactly what I did.

Haven Editorial: Captain America – The Representation of a Nation

Now, first and foremost I know I am probably going to get a lot of heat for this from a community of comic readers out there, but it’s my website so I will say what I want and you’ll are going to have to live with it.

Captain America one of the idealist poster boys for Marvel both in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and also in the comics. However in recent events he has taken somewhat of a dark turn after the cosmic cube rewrote his personal history turning him into an agent of Hydra and he’s slowly begun killing off all the heroes he fought alongside all these years.

But when you think of it, Marvel has always taken a very steadfast stand on politics. They have been using their comics to illustrate a point to the readers; at least from my perspective they have been.

Sam Wilson is currently the new Captain America fighting for truth and justice the same way the Captain America of old once did. However he is a liberal of sorts and that offends a lot of people, but the classic Captain America; Steven Rodgers represents the old America or in this case the current America.

Look around you; you see riots, brawling, racism, fascism, and hatred causing the country to literally tear itself apart at the seams. As a person who’s lived outside of the United States I can assure you that American’s are not taken to very pleasantly weather in be in Europe, the Middle East, England or other countries out there. We are looked down upon because of how we treat each other and when you think of it.

Captain America the person we all knew, loved, and trusted being the enemy is profoundly accurate because this is what America is. We let people live our lives without any choice of our own like the President being Donald Trump right now, who is trying to pass a bill that states that anyone with a variety of illnesses can no longer receive medical care such as me.

Yet, we have a person like Bernie Sanders who is standing up for us, against all odds and fighting for our true rights that we think we’ve had. Bernie Sanders is essentially the New Captain America with his political views not being in line with the main stream media.

We are at the cross-roads as a country, both in comics and in the way the nation is run and by who its run. We see the enemy and how its drawing closer, but a lot of people have trouble accepting this as a truth because of who it is. But Marvel gave it a face, a name, and a cause Captain America the original Captain America is a Hydra agent who thinks that controlling people is the best solution and we have to sacrifice our lives, and our freedoms for this cause.

No man can be controlled, just as no one can stop time from moving forward.

The only way this situation could become even more clear to people is if Donald Trump took Captain America’s shield and did a hand to hand fight with Bernie Sanders. It’s sad though, that the times continue to move on, and the people we thought we could trust turn out to be our greatest enemy.

Comics are a means of expression just like all other forms of art, but at the same time each art form is meant to help invoke a emotion, whether it be pity, remorse, anger, or despair. If anything the story that is unfolding right now before our eyes is real, just as the struggle to choose to keep on living a dream or face the reality of the situation outside our door.

America is considered the enemy, to a lot of people, and is viewed with such atrocity that a lot of people want to leave. Those who choose to stay, have to come to terms with the realization that, this is the path they choose, they choose to fight for healthcare, they choose to fight for their lives that the government could deem forfeit at a given moment.

But for those who want to leave, but can’t you will have my eternal sympathy.
