Haven Review: Phoenix Wright Spirit of Justice

phoenixwrightCourt is back in order and with it comes a new Phoenix Wright title, now I for one am actually quite a fan of the series and have played some previous titles before on road trips with my parents.

aceattorney6spiritofjusticetrailerign-1462982664287_largeNow back with all his friends and colleagues court is heating up like never before as a Phoenix lands in a mystical land filled with spirit mediums and no defense attorneys and he begins to stand up for his newest friend and finds himself in a bind.

With the story unfolding Phoenix learns that if he loses a case here he will meet the same fate as the people he is defending which can be a quick and painful death. But don’t worry if he does die he can spend his time in the Twilight realm with everyone who also was killed or has died before.pwaa_spirit_of_justice_screens_05_bmp_jpgcopy_thumb

Because living in the land of spirits is fun and exciting, but seriously the game has a amazing story with a vast array of characters to call on an talk too. That helps just add more depth to the franchise in new exciting cases that will intrigue you and boggle your minds.

I found the musical score of the game equally enjoyable and great for setting the tone to the newest cases such as the first case with hippie heavy metal Jesus.

1472418410493Now the game itself takes not only the team you have made from the previous titles but also compiles everything you have learned or should have learned up to that point with flawless integration and if you are new to the series as well the game gives you the opportunity to learn about all the features in it with quick and very precise tutorials to make things easier for everyone.

So players who have never touched a Phoenix Wright title can start with this one if they wanted too and jump right into the action by yelling objection into your microphone and slamming your hands down on your desk.phoenix_wright_ace_attorney_spirit_of_justice_3ds_eshop_screenshot_2

In conclusion though the game is perfect in both its design aspect from its controls, to its music and even to the story it has with a great array of characters to watch and interact with. It ends up being one of the best Phoenix Wright titles I have ever played and I would highly recommend it to anyone weather they are old fans or new comers.

aceattorney6-0cfe1Capcom has really outdone themselves with this franchise and being innovative with new styles of games. I wish at times they would pay more proper attention to their blue bomber but that’s an article for another day.

Haven Review: Mighty No.9

2942839-mighty+no.9_logo_brush+up1015Growing up there have been very few games that have left an impression on me. One of those games was Mega Man and the franchise it spawned. However in the declining years we have witnessed many attempts to create a better and better Mega Man title and we have blamed Capcom.

All the way to the point where Capcom has stopped producing Mega Man games which lead to them not even knowing who are fabled blue bomber is when Nintendo asked to put him in smash brothers.

However not long ago the former creator of Mega Man left Capcom and although he could not take his prodigal son with him. He decided to create a new IP in the name of Mighty No.9 or Beck if you want to call him by his proper name. A Kickstarter was launched and funding began to flow in for his new Mega Man and after a series of lengthy delays we ended up with a bad trailer and a game shortly after.
mighty-no-9-freeze Which I have had the dubious honor of playing both on Xbox One and the PC and I have come to a reasonable conclusion that! It probably wasn’t Capcom’s fault for the decline of Mega Man.

The first of many issues I encountered was its level design and lack of instruction for the game character. You see in the original games they went to great lengths to teach you the controls from jumping, to attacking and dodging, in this it gives you a very brief tutorial at the start of the game and after that.. We’ll it’s on your own after that.

Take for example the Power Plant stage in the game at one point of the stage it tells you to do a crotch dash and you have not been taught that anywhere in the game at all. So you try and waste countless lives because if you fail to do it you will instantly die.3083984-screens_07

The second issue also follows that the game is very unforgiving in terms of what to do. Once you learn the crotch dash is you literally dashing while pressing down on the D-pad you think you can finally avoid dying from the generators in the Power Plant stage. Well you are wrong in this case.

You see unlike the predecessors of his, you knew what the enemy or buildings hitbox looks like just by staring at it. You will understand this is where you go, this is where you avoid death and in this case you don’t get that. And this isn’t the only stage to do this, almost all the stages have this scenario somewhere in them that creates the issue of instant death that will frustrate and confuse the player to no end.mighty-no-9-screen-4

However the game has some good points, most notably the musical composition which remains very upbeat and the controls are pretty easy to understand as well. So the games faults just end up being bad level design, bad character design, bad dialog, and despite all the money they put into the title this does not have the polish we all were hoping for in terms of a Mega Man game.

Don’t get me wrong, he tried and he probably tried really hard and for that we give him credit. But there is no way I can honestly recommend this title to anyone, not even a die-hard Mega Man fan. It ends up being just a big pile of disappointment.

Sorry guy’s but the Super Fighting Robot we are looking for may never be seen again. At least Capcom released the classics on steam and other consoles again.

Haven Review: Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma

Zero-Time-Dilemma-logo-Primer-PlayerNow I should mention that Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma  is the first Spike Chunsoft title I have ever played and so with that statement let it be known. I am really enjoying myself so let’s jump right into the review now shall we?

The game is a decision game, a game of choice each with its own consequences and the player faces that quite often. Taking a page from the multiverse theory of multiple realities in which every outcome has actually happened whether good or bad.

lq6uxnsv1ybtnub5ak8s

That being said I have played the game for a good while now and I have seen a lot of the results and it is brutal, each with its own unique story and continuation. Which ultimately affects the overall gameplay giving me the player a very unique experience. It is further enhanced also by letting the player go back and redo certain scenarios over again until you have more favorable outcomes.

But lets talk a bit more about the game itself, the game is launching on the Nintendo 3DS, the Sony PSVita, as well as Windows through Steam and we were playing the Steam version. Although a bit buggy I suspect in the future that those issues will be fixed. You can have anti-aliasing support and a few extra graphic settings to make the game run more favorable on your system. But ultimately my experience with that was not so great as no matter what option I choose the game lagged and stuttered and it ran very poorly. Which is also notable in our videos as you watch and the characters lips are all out of sync as well.ZTD_GameBoxes-632x399

another issue I found was a small audio bug where the game would not save your options from BGM, SFX, and character voices. You could lower the volume to these but unless these settings are changed while you were actually playing and had a free use of the options menu during game-play your settings would not be saved.asdf

Now the characters all seem one-sided in their personalities and for me that seems is a bit of a disappointment. You got one guy who is always angry, one guy who is always calm, one girl who is super shy, one girl who is super calm but with a steer demeanor, I could go on but I’d rather not.  The characters don’t really have any unique traits that make me want to like them more apart from their visual appeal and none of them stand out to me in my head mentally.

But, that does work overall with the premise of the game. Where the only means to escape the place you are being held is to kill off up to six other characters to get passwords to open up a sealed door which will lead to your escape. You don’t feel tied to any character or try to save them because of how bland they are and you become more okay with their one-sided character traits to the point where you actually get a jolly out of killing them off.2016-02-22-193445.0

A lot of the issues I’ve run into in the game are minute and small problems but are easily overlooked as the gameplay of the game standouts a lot and has a lot of branching paths from which the player can choose different means of surviving in games to the death and the choice of being able to experience all of the outcomes is really amazing.

The music also really helps set the tone of the game as well as when things boil down to decision time where the player has to choose the outcome that they will live with and not know the results until after it happens. The worst part of that though the intense problem solving you got to do at times where in the end the player could ultimately face death even after doing everything you possibly can to stay alive.

Zero-Time-Dilemma-Shot-03

In conclusion though the game offers a unique and varying experience and is definitely one of the more unique titles we have had the privilege of playing. Which I can only really say I hope you pick up a copy upon its release as it is really good despite its few flaws that I mentioned.

You will enjoy putting all the one-sided characters to death and not regret doing it not even a tiny bit.
