Haven Review: Walking Dead: A New Frontier

Skybound known for creating the wonderful comics and possibly their biggest hit The Walking Dead, which has spawned a great television show and for us most importantly the Telltale series and from that we now have our season three! Walking Dead: A New Frontier!

Following the story of Clementine and her journey in the world inhabited by zombies, shes begun to grow into a young beautiful woman who can still pop a cap into someone arse when the need arises and honestly, its been a roller coaster just watching her grow up from her experiences with Lee in season one and her adventures with Kenny in season two. Now we get to go on the emotional roller coaster again as she has to traverse the zombie filled wastelands again with new friends and allies trying to protect herself and them as well. How time and the times have changed a once fairly wide eyed girl into a person who has to struggle each day for her own survival it.

Like all Telltale titles I am not fond of the control styles and its fairly linear story-telling, but that is because I’ve played so many at this point but what I do love so far is the story. There is just something about the Walking Dead that keeps dragging me back, not the show but the Telltale experience. I am deathly afraid of the undead and for the most part it pushes me away from the show although I have watched it. But The Walking Dead franchise mixed with the way Telltale shows the story off is wonderful.

Playing through a A New Frontier I still encounter the same situations would you expect, but it ultimately becomes more of a refreshing moment rather than a tiresome en-devour. Because now the stakes are higher with only your family at stake the game makes you choose what you would do to protect them.

Like its predecessors music for the most part isn’t really a crucial part to the game, for most of the game its basic linear story-telling but the void of sound helps set the tone even more for the game because you are in a post apocalyptic world where zombies are everywhere and the biggest threat you face is each other.

People replace the sense of kindness for cruelty to get by and to try to survive against the new frontier. But really though it is just so nice to see Clementine alive after all these years and still taking care of that baby in tow aiming to keep herself and the kid safe as they blow people and zombies brains out.

Conclusion though the game  is pretty nice, and considering its Walking Dead title again from Telltale I didn’t really need to say that, the titles generally speak for themselves and they remain a staple of enjoyment in the games we play.

Haven Review: Kill Me Again

   Kill Me Again is a free mobile zombie puzzle shooter. Your character moves on rails, backwards as zombies advance on you. Your job is to match 3 colors of bullet casings in order to damage to them. The more casings you line up, the more damage you do. You level up as you go, and get skill points to unlock new skills. Some of these are straight bonuses to your stats, others are combo and chain skills. If you get 5 of the same color in a row, you activate one of those skills. It’s all fairly straightforward.

Unlike standard match-3 games, in Kill Me Again you can drag colors from anywhere on the board to anywhere else. This is useful for setting up those 5 block combos, but slows you down so that the zombies will have a chance to eat you. At first this seemed like an interesting way to mix up the stale match-3 mechanic, but after a while it became just as mundane.

One fairly interesting feature is “critical hits”. You can hold off on making a match until a zombie is right next to you and starts to glow red. Make the match at this time, and you’re rewarded with bonus damage. I feel like this was a way to switch up the idea that you should make as many matches as quickly as possible, and put a little bit of timing into the game. While this is a great idea in theory, I found that the bonus damage wasn’t worth the wait. It was much more effective to just make as many matches as quickly as possible. There are bosses in the game, and they have weaknesses to specific colors of blocks. This is one of the better mechanics in the game. You have to decide whether or not to go for those weaknesses or go for matches that activate abilities.

My complaints are small enough so that I wouldn’t say the game is bad; rather it’s simply more of a standard puzzle shooter. The place where this garbage really starts to smell is in it’s micro-transactions. For each level you play, you need pills…two pills per level per try (except boss levels, which cost three). At the very beginning of the game you get 10 pills. You get 14 more from the “Day 1” present box. There are present boxes for the first 8 days of the game. These give you pills, money and the occasional consumable item. The game will periodically give you more pills, seemingly at random. So after you blow through all your pills (about an hour into the game) you’ll need to spend some time waiting around until they refresh.

Of course, you can spend money. You can trade real currency for in-game gold bars. You get 10 of these for $1 (USD), for example. You can spend gold bars on numerous things. The first item will probably be pills for 10 gold bars. You get 10 pills. That’s right. Five more fucking levels of play for a dollar. That’s like 5 minutes. You need to spend a dollar if you want to play for 5 more minutes. You can also spend on new weapons and consumables. Weapons will run you about 5 dollars worth of gold. They are also needed in the game to complete rescue quests, which give you jack-all in exchange for your gold bars. Luckily, if you play long enough you might pick up one or two bars from fulfilling challenges and achievements. So these micro-transactions take the game from a standard puzzle shooter to a greedy cash grab.

Haven Review: Batman [2016]

3102947-bruce_selina_rooftop_1920x1080Now jumping right into this the game is fairly straight forward like pretty much all Telltale titles you make some decisions based on your interactions and press a few buttons in a Simon Says kinda combo to try to give the game more of a dynamic feel.

Although this Batman game is taking it a bit further by really pushing for that Simon Says aspect and making Batman more action based than story telling in this approach. However like all Telltale titles the formula gets old very quick and considering we are only on episode one so far I slightly dread what is to come.003_bruce_batcomputer-0-0

However, since this is a Batman title we can finally get a feel for the alter ego of Batman when he is Bruce Wayne and dive further into the characters story and get to know more about the man behind the mask. It tells a story that we don’t truly get to explore when we are reading comics, or watching movies.

So in that regard the story telling is pretty excellent and engaging, showing off a side of the Bat’s we haven’t experienced or see for a good while.wallpaper-2

It also helps build up the character much like the movie Batman – Year One you get to see a story closer to his beginning and not having him more experienced and more brooding that he is later in life. It shows off a younger more virile Bruce Wayne as he begins to meet the rogues from his gallery such as Catwoman, Penguin, and all the rest.

Giving us a back story we heard about but never truly, experienced until just recently. The game sets up a timeline, before the Justice League, before Two-Face and Penguin before these villains and you get to see how everything comes together, and how it’s all connected.

The musical score for the game is spot on and what you would expect from a Batman game. The only true issue I have with the game is the dated Formula Telltale keeps doing with little to no innovation to it. At this point you kind of expect them to release their own story telling engine so anyone can make their own Simon Says story.3102949-grappling_gun_1920x1080

Ultimately the game is solid with solid gameplay, solid story telling, and solid music. I may disagree whole-heartedly with their formula but that is just my biased view. The game is good, and its enjoyable and being a Batman fan this is just a bonus for me. I love it and they did a great job with the game.
